During the 1970s and ’80s, few comedic duos managed to dominate the screen as Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, better known as Cheech and Chong. Their unique brand of humor, often laced with hilarious commentary on counterculture and recreational substance use, resonated with audiences worldwide. But what has happened to the two comics since their heyday?

What’s Cheech Marin Up To?

Marin and Chong started performing stand-up comedy shows together in the late 1960s. They became known for their stoner characters, initially on stage and then through comedy albums and feature films. However, the duo’s relationship ended in 1985 due to declining film success and a strained relationship.

Since the dissolution of their partnership, Marin has enjoyed a diverse career. He pivoted to mainstream film, starring in films like ‘Tin Cup‘ and ‘Spy Kids,‘ while also lending his voice to several animated characters, including Ramone in Disney’s ‘Cars’ franchise. You can see him in this year’s sports comedy-drama ‘Champions with Woody Harrelson’ as well.

Marin also became a familiar face on CBS’s police drama ‘Nash Bridges’ alongside Don Johnson, playing the role of Inspector Joe Dominguez for six seasons. In recent years, Marin stepped into the world of fine art, amassing a collection of Chicano art that is one of the largest and most renowned in the world.

On the other side of the comedic coin, we find Canadian-born Tommy Chong. Chong’s post-Cheech and Chong career has been marked by a blend of advocacy and entertainment. He made guest appearances on TV shows such as ‘That ’70s Show‘ and ‘Dancing with the Stars.‘ He reprised his role from ‘That ’70s Show’ for Netflix’s sequel series ‘That ’90s Show.

Perhaps one of Chong’s most noteworthy achievements has been his advocacy for cannabis reform. He’s used his platform and fame to promote the decriminalization and regulation of marijuana, even launching his line of cannabis products. However, in 2003, he was sentenced to nine months in federal prison for selling bongs and marijuana pipes through his company.

Despite their individual successes, the bond between Marin and Chong remains. They’ve reunited for several tours and comedy specials over the years, proving that their chemistry is far from extinguished. As of 2023, they are still performing live shows together.

According to Cheech’s memoir, he and Chong were not best friends, but they had a relationship like brothers:

“As brothers, we could love and hate with equal intensity, but we always had each other’s backs – because we were brothers.

Most recently, the duo announced a biopic about their rise in comedy in the works. Marin and Chong are executive producers of the new movie, while other producers include David Glickman, Todd Lieberman, Trevor Engelson, and Douglas Banker. However, the production or release dates of the biopic have not been announced yet.
