Speculation has surrounded ‘Deadly Class’ since its abrupt cancellation after the first season in 2019. Still, the hints and clues floating around in the industry suggest that there might still be potential for the series’ return.
What Was Deadly Class’ Premise?
Based on the graphic novel series by Rick Remender and Wesley Craig, Syfy’s ‘Deadly Class’ first premiered in 2019. The show was produced by Anthony and Joe Russo, co-directors of ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ Casting for a pilot began in November 2017, and the series received an order for 10 episodes in April 2018.
The show follows a group of misfit would-be killers, gang leaders, and cartel kings at Kings Dominion. Set in the 1980s during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, it focuses on the life of Marcus Lopez Arguello, a student at Kings Dominion School of the Deadly Arts, where high school kids learn to become trained killers.
Deadly Class maintained decent ratings throughout its first season. In the following days after each episode, it saw the biggest gains in live+7 ratings. Still, the series was discontinued after its first season in June 2019, much to the disappointment of fans.
The Cancellation of Deadly Class
Before the cancellation, Rick Remender had already started writing the second season’s story. Remender and the main cast tried to get Deadly Class season 2 on other networks, especially streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, after Syfy canceled it. Unfortunately, no network came to save them.
So, Deadly Class Season 2 was never officially renewed.
The primary reason for the cancellation of Deadly Class was that the show’s ratings were too low. Another reason is that Syfy doesn’t own the show, as it’s licensed from Sony Pictures Television. Because of this, there was less of a business reason to keep it going from a corporate standpoint.
Will There Be Deadly Class Season 2?
Fast forward to 2023, and the speculation around a new season has gained traction.
A factor that might indicate the potential for a new season is the recent surge in the show’s popularity on streaming platforms. This increased demand could possibly drive the decision to revive the show.
Is There Hope For Revival?
It’s important to note that many shows have been successfully revived after cancellation due to fan demand and increased viewership on streaming platforms. Series like ‘Lucifer‘ and ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘ was brought back to life and continued to thrive after initial cancellations, so the same could be possible for ‘Deadly Class.’
That being said, there are many obstacles to overcome before a new season can become a reality. From coordinating schedules with the original cast to securing financing for production, there are numerous hurdles that the creators may face.
