Michael Cera recently joined Rolling Stone for an interview where he talked about his role in Aaron Sorkin’s crime drama ‘Molly’s Game.’ Cera revealed whether Tobey Maguire, one of the inspiration sources for his character, confronted him about playing him on screen. He said:
“I never talked to Tobey about it. I’ve met him once since making the movie, and it was very pleasant. Or was it before making the movie? Maybe it was before.”
Hoping Tobey had no issue with his role in the movie, Cera continued:
“I hope he doesn’t hold it against me that I played him because it was a great part.”
Released in 2017, ‘Molly’s Game’ saw Cera play a celebrity poker player who was known as Player X. The role was based on celebrity gamblers, including Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Ben Affleck.
In the 2023 comedy-drama film ‘The Adults,’ Cera played a character named Eric, who also had an addiction to a local poker game. Eric aims to be the best poker player in town while trying to balance his relationship with his two sisters.
Asked if he brought some of his poker knowledge from ‘Molly’s Game’ to ‘The Adults,’ Cera responded:
“Definitely. I really loved the way Dustin wrote these poker scenes and the poker frustration. I feel they’re more fleshed out than most poker movies are. Most poker movies and scenes are a little cheesy and lean on people’s stereotypical idea of what poker is. … During ‘Molly’s Game,’ I was kind of looking for a poker game to get back into poker. I had played a friendly home game in Los Angeles. I ended up finding a game out there that has become my standard New York home game, and I really fell in love with it.”
Michael Cera’s latest project was ‘Barbie,’ where he played Allan. He is now working on upcoming film projects, ‘Dream Scenario‘ and ‘Sacramento.‘
