Rapper Mod Sun recently had a chat on Scott Lipps’ video podcast where he explained how Blink-182’s Travis Barker healed his childhood trauma.
Mod Sun recalled his earlier days and mentioned the first time he played the drums live. He told:
“When I was younger, I went to play- my first time I ever played live was that, like, the talent show in seventh grade or something. Me and my friends played ‘Adam’s Song’ and there’s this really good drummer in town. He was like ‘Oh you guys are playing ‘Adam’s Song’? I’ll teach you how to play it, man,’ and I sat down on his drums and he’s like ‘Alright, show me what you’re doing.'”
After what the drummer told him, he didn’t give up on playing. He explained further:
“And I’m playing the most basic, horrible way of playing and he’s like ‘Man, you might as well cancel the gig tomorrow bro, because you can’t play for sh*t.’ And I was like ‘Oh my God.’ I mean I picked Adam’s Song which is pretty complex. So anyways, totally sh*t on me and instead of shying off and being like ‘Okay I can’t do it, I can’t do it,’ I was like ‘F*ck it I’m gonna go and do it anyway.'”
Though he knew how badly he played, he talked to Travis Barker to get his opinion on his playing. He continued:
“Went up there, got through it, that was my first time I’ve ever played. Played it horribly, it’s on Sante, I’ll post it someday. But I was like, ‘Travis yo, my friend told me, he told me I f*cking sucked at drums when I tried to play it.’ I was like, ‘Can I play Adam’s Song real quick?’ He’s like ‘Of course.'”
Mod Sun described his joy:
“Then I sat down. He’s like ‘You just played it perfect bro!’ And I was like, in my mind, I was like ‘Yeah, f*ck you’ to that kid, bro. Who would’ve thought one day Travis is gonna be like ‘You killed it.’ That’s my message to people, in this world those things are possible.’ You know if you allow them to be possible, those things are possible.”
After the drummer helped him get through his trauma, Mod Sun has worked with Barker a few times. Mod Sun has two songs featuring Barker, ‘Never Quit‘, released in 2014, and ‘Down‘, released in 2021.
