Have you ever heard Alanis Morissette’s ’90s anthem, ‘You Oughta Know,’ and thought, ‘Who is this song about?’ Well, get ready to clear the fog. Dave Coulier, the Full House star, and Morissette were together back in the day, and many believe that the song was his wake-up call.

Coulier, famous for his role on the TV show ‘Full House,’ met Morissette in 1992 at an all-star hockey game in Canada. It was a spontaneous encounter that happened just as Coulier was navigating his way through a divorce from his then-wife of two years, Jayne Modean. The couple’s age difference — Morissette was born in June 1974; Coulier in September 1959 — didn’t deter them, and they began dating.

Their relationship lasted for two years, but as the story goes, all good things must come to an end. By 1994, Coulier and Morissette had parted ways, the reasons for their split largely remaining a mystery to the public.

Fast forward a year, and Morissette’s album ‘Jagged Little Pill’ hits the airwaves in June 1995. After the album’s release, fans couldn’t help but wonder if the lyrics of ‘You Oughta Know’ were directed at Coulier. However, Alanis told Howard Stern she wouldn’t confirm or affirm who the song was about in 2004.

During the same episode, Stern’s producer Gary Dell’Abate told the singer that he’d heard the rumors from John Stamos, who was Dave’s co-star in ‘Full House.’ The speculation around this connection was fueled further when Coulier revealed to Buzzfeed in 2014 that Alanis told him he was free to interpret it as he wished:

“I never think about it. I think it’s just really funny that it’s become this urban legend so many years after the fact. I dated Alanis in 1992. You know, it’s just funny to be the supposed subject of that song. First of all, the guy in that song is a real a-hole, so I don’t want to be that guy. Secondly, I asked Alanis, ‘I’m getting calls from the media, and they want to know who this guy is.’ And she said, ‘Well, you know it could be a bunch of people. But you can say whatever you want.'”

According to Coulier, he might actually be the one who fueled the rumors:

“So one time, I was doing a red carpet somewhere, and [the press] just wore me down, and everybody wanted to know, so I said, ‘Yeah, all right, I’m the guy. There I said it.’ So then it became a snowball effect of, ‘OH! So you are the guy!'”

Years later, in a 2022 appearance on a SiriusXM show, Coulier opened up about the first time he heard ‘You Oughta Know’ on the radio in Detroit, saying he never saw Alanis as an ‘angry white girl’:

“I never saw this angry white girl thing that people have coined her as. She was sweet, she was funny, she was super intelligent, super talented. And then I start hearing the voice. I’m like, ‘Wow, this girl can sing.’ And I had no idea, you know, that this was the record. And then I was listening to the lyrics going, ‘Ooh, oh no! Oh, I can’t be this guy.'”

As Dave admitted, he was taken aback by elements of the song that reminded him of his relationship with Morissette, such as a ‘dead fish handshake’ reference, which was something they used to do:

“I parked on the street, and I listened to the whole record, and there was a lot of familiar stuff in there that she and I had talked about. I started listening to it, and I thought, ‘Oh, I think I may have really hurt this woman. And that was my first thought.”

However, the story doesn’t end on a bitter note. Dave said they’ve since buried the hatchet and are on good terms:

“We reconnected, and she couldn’t have been sweeter. And I said, ‘What do you want me to say when people ask me about this relationship?’ And she said, ‘You can say whatever you want.’ So she was really sweet about it. She was kind.”

The actor even shared a touching story of Alanis visiting his sister in the hospital, displaying her kind-hearted nature:

“I’ll tell you the kind of person she is. When my sister Sharon was dying of cancer, Alanis was living in Toronto. My sister was in Detroit. She actually drove to Detroit with her guitar and sat with my sister playing songs and singing to my sister in the hospital. That’s the kind of human being she is. So I’ve never had anything bad to say about her. She’s lovely.”

Despite the speculation, Morissette has consistently remained tight-lipped about the inspiration behind ‘You Oughta Know.’ Although she told Stern that ‘she doesn’t plan to reveal the song’s true inspiration, in a 2019 interview on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Morissette suggested that more than one person had claimed to be the song’s subject:

“No revealing, but I am intrigued at the thought — or at the fact — that more than one person has taken credit for it. I’m thinking, I don’t know if you want to take credit for being the person I wrote ‘You Oughta Know’ about. I just think: If you’re going to take credit for a song where I’m singing about someone being a douche or an a**hole, you might not want to say, ‘Hey! That’s me!'”

Despite all the speculation and hearsay, the true inspiration behind ‘You Oughta Know’ remains a mystery. Alanis remains mum on the matter, leaving us hanging with the cliffhanger. So, who’s the guy in the song? We’re still waiting for the big reveal.
