In ‘Back to the Future,’ performances by Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown, Michael J. Fox as Marty, and Lea Thompson and Crispin Glover as Marty’s parents are memorable, but one character stands out. That’s the ‘love-to-hate-him’ bully Biff Tannen, brought to life with a mix of meanness and silliness by Thomas F. Wilson.

Apparently, Wilson found inspiration for his breakout role through his own real-life experiences, as he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2015 while talking about the creation process of the Biff character:

“A thin and sickly kid, I was pushed around and beaten up by bullies throughout my childhood until I grew bigger than everybody, and it stopped. I knew very well how they operate, and specifically the joy they take in scaring people. I’d stared them in the face so often that it wasn’t particularly challenging to do an impression.”

Recalling the effort he put into the role, the actor added:

“Underneath the tsunami of pop iconography is a performance of a difficult role that I worked very hard on, and I’m very proud of.”

He also explained the reason for his limited appearances at ‘Back to the Future’ events:

“The fact is, I’m a far better actor and artist at work than I am a ‘legendary icon.’ I’m also working very frequently and am unavailable to appear at events.”

Wilson’s portrayal of Tannen became a hallmark of the ‘Back to the Future’ series. He not only reprised his role in the sequels ‘Back to the Future Part II’ and ‘Back to the Future Part III,’ but also took on the roles of Biff’s grandson, Griff Tannen, and great-grandfather, Buford ‘Mad Dog’ Tannen.

In his future projects, Thomas acted in various movies and TV series, such as ‘Freaks and Geeks,’ ‘The Heat,’ ‘The Informant,’ ‘Franklin & Bash,’ and ‘Ghost Whisperer.’ He’s also lent his voice to various supporting characters in Nickelodeon’s shows like ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ and ‘Pig Goat Banana Cricket.’
