Garth Brooks took on a creative journey in 1999 when he introduced a one-off fictional rock persona named Chris Gaines, who he originally planned to portray in the movie ‘The Lamb.’ The character of Chris Gaines was envisioned as a dark-haired Australian rock star, and Brooks embodied him for the album ‘Garth Brooks…in the Life of Chris Gaines.’

The album featured the hit single ‘Lost in You,’ which became the singer’s first top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at Number 5. The album, structured as a greatest hits compilation from Gaines’ fictitious previous albums, was also originally intended to be part of the same movie project.

During the album’s promotional phase, the singer embraced the Chris Gaines persona for a mockumentary-style episode of VH1’s ‘Behind the Music.’ He even hosted ‘Saturday Night Live,’ where he performed as the musical guest dressed as Gaines.

Following a few other TV appearances, the Gaines character gradually faded from the limelight. Unfortunately, ‘The Lamb’ movie project never materialized. In late 2000, Brooks also made an announcement that he would retire from country music to prioritize his family.

In an interview at Billboard Country Live in Nashville in June 2023, Garth expressed his desire to revive his rock alter ego, Chris Gaines, more than 20 years after its debut, saying:

“The Gaines project was a lot of time put in — because it’s not natural, you’re acting on a record — but I want to do it simply for people who love the Gaines project.”

He added:

“And selfishly, I love the Chris Gaines record, so I want to do it for me. It challenged me as a vocalist. So I don’t know when we’re going to get to it, but it’s on the list.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Brooks also humorously joked about creating and releasing the five fictional albums attributed to Gaines, acknowledging that the effort might take longer than before.
