Following a recent Megadeth concert in Stockholm, Dave Mustaine had a chat with Sweden’s SVT and talked about fans throwing things at the stage to get noticed by the artists. He shared:

“If people don’t like you, they’re gonna throw s**t. Maybe it’s graduated from rotten tomatoes to dildos; I don’t know. But if you’re giving them a great show, they’re not gonna do that — they’re not gonna do that. So don’t get up there acting like a spoiled f**king brat and telling them not to throw stuff.”

Then, the singer added:

“I don’t have to worry about it. Plus, my eyesight is that bad, I probably won’t see anything flying through the air until it’s too late.”

Even though Mustaine implied he wasn’t too bothered by this kind of action, many musicians had a problem with it in the past. Lemmy Kilmister, for example, got a hand injury in 1989 because someone threw a razor blade on stage during a gig in Yugoslavia.

The late Motörhead frontman later spoke of the incident on The Bailey Brothers TV show and said:

“I nearly lost my hand, you understand me? If I lose my hand, my life is over. You realize that? I’d have to shoot myself because I can’t stand it. I’m not going to put up with people throwing things out of the audience anymore… This is never going to happen to me again.”

A few years later, the band ended a concert in Brisbane, Australia, early when the audience started to throw cans at the stage.

Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine recalled the prank he played in an interview with AXS TV’s Power Hour that almost got him in trouble with NASA. The rocker retold the story of how he got to tour NASA; he explained:

“Many years ago, when I was on the radio in Houston, I had said, ‘I thought it was a joke that they were spending 15 million dollars to send a Japanese professor up into space to blow bubbles.’ Oh my god, well, I don’t care, it’s like the First Amendment right, so I had said that, and then the wife of an astronaut heard me, and they called up and said, ‘Hey, we want to give you a tour of NASA to show you that we’re not wasting time.'”

On the day when the rocker was touring the labs, he pulled a prank on the people that were showing him around, which almost got him in trouble. Dave added:

“So I went there right, and I’m cruising around by myself, and we go to Skylab, where the modules are, and I said, ‘So what’s the difference between these three?’ They said, ‘Oh, they’re all three different manufacturers,’ and I said, ‘Do they fit together?’ and they said, ‘No,’ and I grabbed my jacket, and I go, ‘Are you getting this?’ and they groped on me; they swooped on me and said, ‘You’re not recording this are you?’ I said, ‘Of course not; I was kidding around.'”

Dave’s comments about space did get him to explore NASA; however, his interest in Elon Musk influenced a track called ‘Mission To Mars’ on Megadeth’s ‘The Sick, The Dying… and the Dead!’ album. The rocker shared during the interview what the inspiration behind the song was by adding:

“Elon Musk shot a Tesla up into space, and I said, ‘The only thing missing was one of my Gibson Flying V’s in the front seat; you know I would have loved to have done that to put a nice bright red Dave Mustaine guitar in space.'”

During a recent interview with Andrew Daly of Metal Edge, former Megadeth bassist David Ellefson disclosed that he believes Megadeth functions as Dave Mustaine‘s solo project rather than a collective effort.

Referring to Megadeth’s current state, the musician said:

“Megadeth, as it stands now, is not what it was meant to be. It could be much more, while not distracting from the fact that Dave is musical quarterback.”

He further elaborated on Mustaine’s impact on the band:

“Megadeth is supposed to be a group, not a solo project masquerading as a group. It’s always been a group. But there’s a reason the guys in the band back in 1983 aren’t playing with Dave now. But there’s also a reason that when other people left, I stuck around. Not a lot of people know how to complete Dave’s sentences. But I inherently know how to complete the musical sentences of Megadeth. It’s my primary language.”

Ellefson also reflected on his departure from Megadeth:

“The fact that things in Megadeth when down as they did was a blessing in disguise. Because even before I was fired, it was clear that I was not musically wanted in Megadeth. Everything I had written and recorded was pulled from the last album [‘The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!’]. I guess it took the gates of hell opening for me to finally escape what had become a rough situation. So, I’m not bitter at all. I’m happy to be doing my own thing.”

Despite the challenging situation with Mustaine, the bassist doesn’t regret his dismissal and is content pursuing his own musical endeavors. Following his departure from Megadeth, Ellefson has kept busy through his works with Kings of Thrash, the Lucid, and Dieth. His debut album with Dieth, ‘To Hell and Back,’ arrived on June 2.

David Ellefson recently appeared on ‘Vox and Hops’ and revealed that he was thankful for Dave Mustaine. Keeping in mind their long history, here’s what Ellefson said:

“Look, I don’t regret it at all. I wouldn’t have changed any of it, man. I got to Hollywood at the f*cking perfect time, man. The week we got there was just the best. I meet Dave [Mustaine], we start Megadeth, and on it goes. And I kind of consider that… That was divine for both of us.”

Even after all of the back and forth between him and Mustaine, including getting fired from the band, David still said:

“He needed a real right-hand man who was going to frickin’ be there, and that was me. And I needed someone to pilot the jungle. He knew his shit, and he grew up around the area. And I’m thankful for him every day. Despite all of it between me and Dave, I’m always thankful for him that he was the big brother that helped me get through that.”

Going back to David’s dismissal from Megadeth, it all stemmed from a leaked sex video scandal and Mustaine having to rerecord the bass parts of the ‘The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!’ album. On Gimme Metal’s ‘The Dave Mustaine Show’ in 2021, Dave shared what the band was doing; he said:

“I just wanna thank you for all the kind words and support as we get ready for this next tour and continue to hunt for a new bass player. We are making progress. The record’s being completed, and we’re going to have someone coming in in a couple of weeks to replace the bass tracks that we had […].”
