Nic Cester gave insider scoop on Jet’s mega-hit ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl,’ and it turns out the track was about his unsuccessful attempts with women. He explained:

“At first, it was an angry song about my unsuccessful attempts to pull women. The original hook went: ‘You’re just like every other girl.’ But the guys in the band said: ‘Be more positive, you grumpy bastard!'” And the line that runs: ‘She’s so sweet, with her get-back stare.'”

Even though there were criticisms about the song being too similar to Iggy Pop’s ‘Lust For Life,’ Nic shared his main influence behind the song by adding:

“When I was writing the song, it was a lot about the way the words sounded and pushing the diction. I wanted to spit out the words in the way Mick Jagger does. The vocal is quite percussive, and we’ve got a bit of distortion on it like they had back in the days of Stax and Motown.”

This wasn’t the first time the singer shared his influences on the track since he also told Songwriting Magazine in 2019 in detail about his vision for the song; he said:

“I was listening to a lot of The Who. I know we were heavily criticized for the ‘Lust For Life’ comparison, but that was never, ever on my radar – it was more Motown, like ‘You Can’t Hurry Love,’ or even [The Jam’s] ‘Town Called Malice.’ That was where my head was at. It’s just that Motown groove that’s been used a thousand times in a lot of other songs.”
