Ahead of Yes’ upcoming American and European tours, vocalist Jon Davison recently sat down with Classic Rock for an interview. During the chat, he explained the role Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins played in his hiring to the band. The singer said:

“Taylor had been talking me up for years. He was so magnanimous. He kept telling Chris [Squire]: ‘If you ever need a new vocalist, I know the guy.’ I think Chris acquiesced just to shut him up. Then, of course, we all met and played together, and Chris realized it was the right thing.”

When Davison joined Yes, it was to replace Benoit David, who had already stepped in Jon Anderson’s place in 2008. This decision was met with some criticism from fans who questioned the band’s choice to go on without Anderson.

Talking about the comments on the matter, the vocalist explained:

“I didn’t assume any responsibility for that. I mean, why would I? I’m just the guy they hired, and I would be crazy not to take the gig. I know Jon realizes that, so there’s no blame on me for any reason.”

Anderson had to leave the band due to health problems during their 40th-anniversary tour. So, when Yes hired a new vocalist and kept on touring without him at the time, the relationship between the band members and the singer got tense, making a reunion with the original members unlikely.
