Sweet voiced his encouragement for Shaddix’s spiritual journey and reflected on the shared human experience of faith. “I’m very happy for Jacoby Shaddix,” Sweet said. “I’ve been saying for years that at some point, we all have a ‘God’ experience. Some of us rebel and deny Christ, and some of us accept and receive Christ. Jesus has given us all the opportunity to choose where we will go. Some choose sooner and some choose later. And sadly, many don’t.”

He went on to speak about the growing significance of faith as people age. “Personally, I believe as we get older, we start to understand and realize that we are not invincible,” he continued. “We all die. We just don’t know when. And we will all step into eternity. It’s the most important decision of our lives.”

Recently, Shaddix revealed that he had surrendered his life to Jesus Christ, saying, “I finally put the bottle down 13 years ago. More than 13 years ago. And about a year after that, I finally gave my life to the Lord Jesus Christ. Changed my life forever. I have recently been convicted to share my faith walk with the world. I will be honest it’s been a rocky road littered with failure and sin but I continue to turn my will and my life over to the lord one day at a time. God keep doing your work on me! Praise Jesus!”

Shaddix’s spiritual rebirth has been a defining part of his personal evolution over the past decade. According to Cross Rhythms, the Papa Roach frontman became a Christian in 2012 after years of battling substance abuse. In the years following, he began speaking publicly about his faith at major U.S. events, sharing his story and even incorporating his beliefs into his music. In more recent interviews, the singer has been candid about his convictions. “I follow a man named Jesus, and I think he’s awesome,” Shaddix stated, underscoring how central his faith has become to his life.

His beliefs have also shaped Papa Roach’s artistic direction. Cross Rhythms noted that the band’s 2015 album F.E.A.R. features tracks with overt Christian themes, including “Devil” and “Hope For The Hopeless.” This period signified a new creative phase for a band once primarily associated with mainstream hard rock and nu metal.

Despite his deep religious beliefs, Papa Roach continues to tour and produce music that resonates with a wide audience. This balance highlights how Shaddix’s faith coexists with the band’s long-standing identity. His openness in merging his spirituality with his public role as a rock musician demonstrates his dedication to authenticity—both in his faith and in his art.

He shared his thoughts on Facebook after the announcement that Bad Bunny would perform at Super Bowl LX.

This led Sweet to question the absence of rock acts at such a major event. “There’s nothing like a good, old fashioned half-time rock show,” Sweet said. “Will we ever see a rock band delivering a rock set at The Super Bowl again? Probably not…”

Sweet’s post drew a large response from fans and followers, prompting him to add another comment acknowledging their engagement. “Thanks for sharing,” he continued. “Enough ‘noise’ sometimes makes a difference.”

Sweet’s remarks highlight the ongoing shift in Super Bowl halftime entertainment, which has largely moved away from rock over the last two decades. His frustration echoes broader discussions about genre representation at high-profile cultural events.

According to Rock95, rock bands such as The Rolling Stones in 2006 and U2 in 2002 delivered some of the most memorable halftime performances. U2’s tribute following 9/11 was particularly noted for its emotional depth and musical impact, showing how rock could connect powerfully with massive audiences during pivotal moments.

However, halftime shows have since evolved to emphasize solo pop and hip-hop artists, prioritizing visual spectacle and mass appeal over traditional rock performances. Giddy Up America observed that modern productions now center on pop and hip-hop stars with wide mainstream reach and elaborate stage designs.

This evolution mirrors broader trends in entertainment. Artists like Kendrick Lamar in 2025 and the upcoming Bad Bunny performance illustrate the NFL’s goal to attract younger and more diverse audiences. CBS Sports noted that the halftime show has transformed into a cultural event focused on spectacle and chart-topping appeal.

The decline of rock representation at the Super Bowl parallels larger changes in the music industry itself. Streaming platforms and social media have shifted promotional priorities toward genres that perform well online. Sweet’s call for “enough noise” to make a difference underscores the debate over whether major events should preserve genre diversity or continue aligning with prevailing market trends.

In the interview, Sweet also revealed why Rob Halford of Judas Priest was his favourite metal vocalist, and talked about how Halford influenced his vocal career. He said:

“Well, Halford is my favourite metal vocalist of all time, as he is I’m sure most people who like metal. He’s the biggest influence on me. I mean, Rob Halford really changed me as a vocalist. I didn’t use to scream, I didn’t use to hit high notes until I heard Rob.”

Michael also told the first time he heard of Judas Priest’s Joan Baez cover, ‘Diamond and Rust’:

“And the first song I heard was ‘Diamonds and Rust’ from [1979 Priest live album] ‘Unleashed in The East’ on the radio. My sister was taking me to school and dropped me off and I heard that and I’m like, ‘What in the world is this?’”

The vocalist continued talking about the process he went through and his practices to enhance his vocal skills:

“After school, I went out and found the album bought it, listened to it. And it changed me as a vocalist. I started practicing high notes. I developed my upper register on my own. I didn’t go to a vocal coach for that. And I used to do techniques and try different things and I eventually built up and developed my lung capacity.”

Michael also added:

“And that was based on Halford, and I have him to thank for that. Eventually, I took a few vocal lessons with Elizabeth Sabine but for the most part Rob Halford really shaped me as a singer. And I don’t know if he would want to hear that or not, although Rob’s always been gracious to us.”
