Journey guitarist Neal Schon has announced that keyboardist Jonathan Cain has decided to leave the band. He shared the update in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), addressing Cain’s farewell and reaffirming his dedication to continuing Journey’s legacy.

“Jonathan Cain announced his farewell to Journey tonight,” Schon wrote. “I’m nowhere near done! Journey has so much more life ahead!”

He closed his message on a hopeful note about what lies ahead for the band. “I’m sure we will have a great tour!” he added.

This news follows years of public tension between Schon and Cain, who have long been key figures in Journey’s history. Despite their creative partnership, there has been no official confirmation from either Jonathan Cain or the band regarding his departure.

Cain joined Journey in 1980, succeeding original keyboardist Gregg Rolie, and became central to the group’s classic sound. According to American Songwriter, he co-wrote many of Journey’s biggest hits, such as “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Faithfully,” and “Open Arms,” helping the band achieve monumental success in the 1980s.

In recent years, however, Cain and Schon’s relationship has become increasingly strained. Stairway to 11 reported that the two openly discussed deep personal and professional conflicts that intensified between 2024 and 2025, involving financial management, touring choices, and the band’s direction. Matters escalated legally in July 2024, when Cain filed a lawsuit in Delaware accusing Schon of excessive spending on the band’s credit card.

Despite the disputes, there were hints of reconciliation earlier this year. Metal Wani noted that in October 2025, Schon shared a positive update, saying, “Everything is cool… I’ve had some great conversations with Jonathan lately and some great meetings with him for the first time in many years.” This suggested that communication between the two had improved and that they were “on the same page” regarding Journey’s future.

At present, there has been no official statement from Jonathan Cain or the band confirming his exit. Further updates are anticipated.

You know, we decided to take a year off of which we did, [and that] gives everybody some time to think about everything that’s going on,” Schon said. “You know, I’ve had some great conversations with Jonathan lately and some great meetings with him for the first time in many years.”

Schon expressed optimism about Journey’s upcoming tour and their improved working dynamic. “We seem to be on the same page, which is a good sign for me,” he continued. “I think that it’s going to be a fun, happy tour. [It’s not going to be] just me standing on one side of the stage and Jon on the other… I think we’re going to really come together this time.”

This positive outlook marks a major change from the tensions that dominated headlines in 2024. Ultimate Classic Rock reported that Cain filed a lawsuit against Schon in July 2024, alleging excessive spending on hotel rooms costing up to $10,000 a night and private jet travel. Cain claimed these expenses threatened the band’s ability to pay its crew and staff.

The dispute focused on Freedom 2020, Inc., the company that manages Journey’s touring operations. According to American Songwriter, both Schon and Cain each own 50% of the company and serve as its only board members, often resulting in deadlocks over business decisions that fueled their personal conflicts.

The friction had tangible effects: iHeart reported that Journey canceled their planned UK and Ireland tour dates in August 2024, citing “circumstances beyond the band’s control.” The timing suggested the cancellations were linked to the ongoing legal battle.

By late summer 2024, the court resolved the dispute by appointing a custodian to handle company decisions when Schon and Cain are unable to agree. American Songwriter noted that this arrangement was designed to prevent future stalemates, allowing the band to continue touring and recording smoothly.

Schon’s recent remarks indicate that the time off and renewed dialogue have helped mend the relationship beyond just legal measures. His focus on unity and collaboration suggests Journey may be entering a new period of stability as they look ahead to future performances.

Journey’s Neal Schon recently voiced his lack of enthusiasm for U2’s concert at the Las Vegas Sphere.

Following a tweet by Las Vegas Review-Journal’s columnist John Katsilometes, which featured a video clip of U2’s Sphere performance, Schon responded:

“Nah… I’m not feeling or seeing it.”

While many were in awe of the Sphere’s visual and audio capabilities, with some expressing strong admiration, Schon seemed to appear less enthusiastic.

U2 commenced their residency titled ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere‘ on September 29. This series of concerts, scheduled to run until December 16, celebrates the band’s 1991 album ‘Achtung Baby.’ The show is being held at the Sphere at the Venetian Resort in Paradise, Nevada.

One notable change for U2 during the shows is the absence of their long-time drummer Larry Mullen Jr., who is currently recovering from surgery. This marks the first time since 1978 that the band is performing without him. In his place, Bram van den Berg from Krezip has stepped in.

These concerts were initially rumored in July 2022 and were later confirmed in a Super Bowl LVII advertisement in February 2023. By April and May, tickets were available for purchase. U2 also marked the occasion by releasing a Las Vegas-themed single titled ‘Atomic City.‘
