Josh Freese recently posted an emotional message after the conclusion of Nine Inch Nails’ “Peel It Back” tour. In an Instagram statement, he shared gratitude for the experience and reflected on his return to the band. Freese had rejoined Nine Inch Nails after parting ways with Foo Fighters, and he used the final show to thank fans while looking back on his journey.

“Tonight’s the last show of the Nine Inch Nails ‘Peel It Back’ tour,” Freese said. “Incredible shows, top tier crew, management, etc. And the band…well, like I’ve said before, this is one of the few situations where I can walk off stage every night feeling confident and satisfied. It’s not always like that, so it’s nice when it happens.”

He also highlighted the warm reception from fans:

“Also, thanks to everyone for the love and support I’ve felt while re-entering the NIN world,” he continued. “Even after my departure back in 2009 they always remained an important part of my extended musical family so it’s been a really nice homecoming for me.”

This farewell closes a major chapter for Freese, whose history with Nine Inch Nails spans nearly two decades of departures and returns.

According to NIN Wiki, Freese first joined the band in 2005, initially filling in during the With Teeth tour before becoming the official drummer. His first stint lasted until 2008, when he left to prioritize family and other projects.

In 2025, he returned under unusual circumstances. As Modern Drummer reported, Ilan Rubin left Nine Inch Nails to join Foo Fighters—the same band that had dismissed Freese earlier that year—creating a rare swap of drummers between two major acts.

Freese’s career as a session and touring musician has made him one of the most sought-after drummers in the industry. Wikipedia notes that he began drumming at age five and was performing professionally by 15. Over the years, he has played with artists such as Guns N’ Roses, Devo, A Perfect Circle, and The Vandals.

His adaptability across genres and reputation for professionalism have made him a go-to drummer for both studio sessions and live performances—making his emotional connection to Nine Inch Nails especially meaningful within his extensive career.

Trent Reznor is working on new music with Atticus Ross for the new upcoming movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

Tony Hawk, though by accident, was the first to break the news in a recent episode of a podcast. Jeff Rowe, the co-director of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, later confirmed the news on his twitter account. The tweet says:

“Well now that my teenage hero Tony Hawk has leaked that my music heroes are doing this I can add that the score is absolutely AMAZING. Exhilarating, terrifying, heartbreaking, full of sounds I didn’t know existed. I don’t have the vocabulary to describe it. I love it so much.“

Although it is now confirmed that the two are composing, nothing new has been leaked or released yet.

In recent years, Reznor and Ross composed the scores for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, Bones and All, Empire Of Light, The Social Network and many other projects. The two achieved a huge success with The Social Network and won the Academy Award.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will be released in theaters in the United States on Wednesday, August 2. The voice cast of the film includes Rogen, Post Malone, Maya Rudolph, Ice Cube, Paul Rudd, Hannibal Buress, and others. You can watch the trailer down below.
