On an episode of Talk Louder podcast, Judas Priest’s guitarist Richie Faulkner talked about the time he had a disagreement with Glenn Tipton during the writing process of their 2018 album ‘Firepower’, and how their ‘argument’ went on.

Richie recalled:

“I said my piece, and Glenn said his piece. I mean, he’s a legend of rock guitar. What the hell do I know? But I felt like I had an opinion. So we had a few words — it wasn’t arguing or anything like that, but we had some strong opinions about where we thought the song should go.”

Faulkner told that he later talked about the disagreement with Rob Halford and revealed how Halford advised him. The guitarist said:

“Afterwards, I said to Rob, ‘Sorry that it got like that.’ And he said, ‘No, you have to do that. Otherwise, you resent the other person and you end up not doing anything. If you think that that opinion is right, you’ve gotta put it out there.’ And he’s right.”

Richie then mentioned the outcomes of ‘resenting’ and how Glenn approached new ideas:

“You can imagine, if you do that [disagree] a few times, you start resenting the people that you’re creating with, and that just stifles the creativity. So I always remember that. And Glenn is one of those guys as well that he’ll always say, ‘What is your idea?’, and if he thinks it’s a better idea, we’ll go with that. So he’s very open to new ideas, which he didn’t have to be. So it was an honor to be included in stuff like that.”

Judas Priest is preparing for a new album. According to Richie Faulkner, the band is working on a new album after 2018’s Firepower. This will be the third album with Faulkner on the guitar after K. K. Downing’s retirement from the band.

Recently, the guitarist was a guest on Mike Z’s YouTube channel, and the challenges regarding the band’s new album came along as a topic. He said:

“Easier in some sense. You know what to expect, but on the other side of things, it becomes harder. You have got to match what you did before. You’ve got to make another record that’s better, better songs, better production. How do we make this better played? So, it raises the bar. Especially the last record seemed to connect with a lot of people around the world. It was well received by a lot of people. So, how can we make a record that’s better than that one? That’s the goal going in. So, it’s harder in some senses as well.”

Apparently, playing as good as the last record was never enough, and there was always room for improvement.

Then, while discussing the new album’s release date, Faulkner said it shouldn’t be too long now. He explained:

“We gotta finalize artwork and actually manufacture the stuff … Make the vinyl and get that done. I think vinyl takes a little while these days, so it depends on how long that takes to actually manufacture the physical product. So that’s the question mark.”
