‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ singer Rick Astley has sued the rapper Yung Gravy for imitating his voice in his hit ‘Betty (Get Money).’ Billboard recently reported that the rapper impersonated Astley’s voice in his song without legal authorization.

The lawsuit was filed by Astley’s attorney Richard Busch, who claimed that the public was unable to tell the difference:

“The public could not tell the difference. The imitation of Mr. Astley’s voice was so successful the public believed it was actually Mr. Astley singing. [It was used] in an effort to capitalize off of the immense popularity and goodwill of Mr. Astley.”

The suit alleges that in order to mimic Astley’s voice, Gravy hired a sound engineer and producer named Nick ‘Popnick’ Seeley, who also wrote the beat for ‘Get Schwifty’ on the series ‘Rick and Morty.’

The filing states that the rapper did not have the right to sample Astley’s hit and that permission was never granted to use or impersonate his voice.

The rapper’s representatives declined to comment on the allegations.

Almost everyone has come across science fiction in some form. It’s everywhere in our culture, from old books to new movies, making it hard to miss. And it has millions of fans all around the world, including the English singer Rick Astley.

In a 2018 interview with Cryptic Rock, Astley opened up about his cinematic tastes and reflections on the world of filmmaking. When asked about his favorite movies from the horror or science fiction genre, the ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ singer replied:

“I’m not really into horror, to be honest. Science fiction I do quite like it, but it depends what it is nowadays. I love the original ‘Blade Runner’ (1982). I loved ‘Blade Runner 2049’ (2017), too; I thought that was amazing. I am quite a fan of Ridley Scott; I think he creates a world when he makes a movie; whether it’s ‘Gladiator’ (2000) or ‘Prometheus’ (2012), he creates a world.”

He added, recalling the film his wife made:

“My wife produced a movie called ‘Coherence’ (2013), a very low-budget film shot in L.A. It’s a very interesting concept. It just goes to show you don’t actually even need a lot of money to tell a story and grab someone for 90 minutes.”

Rick reflected more on his thoughts about the science fiction genre, saying:

“I just think science fiction sometimes either goes the full Ridley Scott budget, but I think it’s a genre you can do things and do things without massive budgets. I very often think it’s about a really good idea. That’s the kind of science fiction I like.”

During a chat with The Times in 2009, Astley said he got into reading many scripts and being passionate about movies thanks to his wife. He even had an idea to write a film himself, which turned into a musical project. He collaborated with someone from California, wrote a script, and was looking for an agent. However, there has been no update on that since.

In a new episode of his YouTube series, the Darkness’ Justin Hawkins shared his thoughts on Rick Astley’s Glastonbury performance of the Smiths’ ‘There Is a Light That Never Goes Out’ on June 24.

The rocker expressed his admiration for Astley’s show and his interaction with the crowd:

“Check out that response. I mean, the crowd is doing it all for him, and he’s still in there. He could easily just hold the microphone out and just let them take it, but he’s not. He’s just leading them. This is a proper performance by a real frontman. Decades of experience, and he knows what he is having fun with it, and people love him. I’m one of the people that love him.”

In the later parts of the video, Hawkins reflected on how impressive the performance was for him:

“That’s just f*cking staggering. It’s so good that I mean if anything from Glastonbury’s footage that I’ve seen comes anywhere near that, it just doesn’t. Let’s face it. That’s a hell of a moment.”

The vocalist also praised the band, the Blossoms, who took the stage with Astley, as he said:

“So well played, and it’s not easy to do this. The Smith sounds simple, Indian, fey, and light, but it’s difficult to do it right, and they’ve done it just exactly the way you want to hear. It’s fantastic.”

The ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ singer had performed the Smiths covers with the Blossoms again in several shows in 2021. During his Glastonbury setlist, he also sang a rendition of AC/DC’s ‘Highway To Hell’ while playing the drums, Harry Styles’ chart-topping track, ‘As It Was,’ and the classics from his catalog.

In a recent interview with BBC, Rick Astley discussed the possibility of covering an AC/DC song at Glastonbury.

Astley was one of the names to play in the Glastonbury Festival, and being his first time in the festival, the singer was asked several questions before the show. He was asked if he would cover ‘Highway To Hell’ as he did in his earlier shows, to which he replied with:

“Who knows? We’ll see how we feel tomorrow. I’m going to just judge the audience and see what they’re up for, and if they’re up for a bit of that, then we might do that. We’re just going to see how it goes.”

During the interview, Astley clarified that he owned many rock records during his earlier days. He said:

“I used to be a drummer as a kid, and I don’t think that ever leaves you, and I think all the records that I taught myself the drums to were rock records. And that album, ‘Highway To Hell’, is just one of the greatest records to try to learn the drums to.”

As for the answer to the question above, yes. Astley did cover ‘Highway To Hell’ at Glastonbury.

Evidently, the singer’s admiration for rock music didn’t fade with time. In 2021, Astley shared a few videos on TikTok, pretending to play his guitar to Slipknot and The Strokes songs. In a later video, he covered R.E.M.’s 1987 song ‘The One I Love‘.

Similarly, he covered Foo Fighters’ ‘Everlong’, leading him to play with the band at Japan’s Summer Sonic Festival.
