Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael first crossed paths in school when they were still children and soon turned their friendship into a musical collaboration, leading to the formation of Wham! in 1981.

In the band’s early phase, Michael and Ridgeley approached a few companies with a ten-minute demo, eventually securing a contract with Innervision Records. This later brought on the release of three albums that went platinum multiple times, and with Ridgeley’s contribution as co-writer, the singles from them received success in the ’80s.

While ‘Last Christmas’ from their last album achieved platinum status in the UK, the US, and Australia, ‘Careless Whisper’ from 1984’s ‘Make It Big’ sold over six million copies, peaking in the charts in more than twenty countries.

After Wham! disbanded in 1986, Ridgeley continued to receive royalties from these songs. According to the reports, the royalties from ‘Careless Whisper’ alone have brought him at least $10 million over the years.

Outside of Wham!, the singer attempted acting, tried a Formula Three career, released a solo album called ‘Son Of Albert,’ and published the memoir ‘Wham! George & Me’ three years after George Michael’s passing in 2016.

Although he and Michael never reunited the band after the ‘The Final’ concert, Ridgeley took part in other Wham!-related projects like documentaries throughout the years. With a career that lasted more than three decades, he earned a $40 million net worth.

Wham! singer Andrew Ridgeley has opened up about his feelings of resentment towards his bandmate and best friend, George Michael. Ridgeley was asked about the power dynamic and if there’s been any friction between the two, with a comment on the biopic movie that recently came out. The singer replied:

“Well, first and foremost, I mean, I couldn’t be resentful of my best friend. It’s just not in me. So I was the proudest person of his creative development throughout, and it was very swift, indeed, as you said.”

Mentioning Wham! had to be a success for Michael, Ridgeley talked about his bandmate’s personality. He said:

“He was discovering himself. He hadn’t found the person, or at least he hadn’t been able to reveal to himself or bring out the person he was. He was very strongly opinionated, and he had great belief in his talent. But that took a little time for him to really, truly, develop and, I think, assert.”

Michael, too, revealed that there was no resentment between the two and stated that he didn’t view his bandmate as ‘the lucky guy who coasted along with George Michael‘, and added that he needed him to be around.

The biopic for Wham! was released this Wednesday, and a few critics have already been made about the movie not providing a complete portrayal of the band’s career and the personal lives of its two members. Apparently, the reason is that the director Chris Smith did not want to include the earlier years, stating that the movie is about the band and the later years only, and added that he didn’t want to take a ‘serious look’ at their story.
