Why Frankie Muniz From Malcolm In The Middle Walked Away From Hollywood

Frankie Muniz played the title character in ‘Malcolm in the Middle‘ between 2000 and 2006. His role brought him nominations for an Emmy Award and two Golden Globe Awards. However, at the height of his acting career, Muniz put his career on hold and pursued various other endeavors.

Speaking to Fox News Digital, Muniz looked back on when he made this decision and revealed his motive. He explained that he wanted to do different things at that point in his life, and these new interests helped him have experiences he is now thankful for. Muniz said:

“When I was on ‘Malcolm,’ I was just so excited to be working on a show. But also, in that same sense, when the show ended, I left the business for a little bit. I started doing other things. I was racing cars. I joined a band. I was touring all over. I opened some businesses, and I got to experience so many amazing things in my life, which now, at this point, has made me able to reflect and look back and be so appreciative of the experience.

As Muniz said, the main motive behind his decision was not wanting to end up like other child actors who took bad turns in their life:

“Now, I have thought about it. Because… so many people go down a bad path, whether it’s drugs, alcohol – whatever it may be. And I think for a lot of people, it’s probably difficult to go from having such success at a young age where you always have people going like, ‘Oh, I love you,’ and everyone wanting you here and there. And then that starts to fade.

The actor argued that stardom at a young age takes its toll on child actors when it starts to fade away:

“I think a lot of people try to replace the missing feeling of [being] wanted with something else. And that really is a negative for a lot of people. Whereas for me, I’ve always been super focused on what I was currently doing because I wanted to be the best at whatever I was doing. And that’s how I am.”

In 2006, the 20-year-old Frankie Muniz told BBC News that he wanted to focus on racing because he thought it would be best to return to the screens after several years of break. Here is what he said:

“I’ve had Malcolm since I was 12. I wanted to act, and right now, I want to race. You can’t really juggle both because, if you do, you don’t get enough time in the car. Truthfully, I think it will be easier for me to leave for a while and come back [to acting] when I’m 23, 24 and be an adult and start fresh.

Muniz’s interest in racing dates back to 2004, when he participated in the Toyota Pro/Celebrity race. Currently, he pursues stock car racing full-time in the ARCA Menards series.

In 2012, he joined the rock band Kingsfoil as the drummer and played with them for two years. He also announced his partnership with The Ridge Wallet in 2021.
