Born in 1944 into a family familiar with racing, with her father’s involvement at the Kearny Bowl, Barbara Roufs got into the drag racing scene of the ’60s as a trophy girl after finishing her studies. Despite being one of the oldest girls at 29, she made a name for herself as the competition started to change in the ’70s.

Around that time, while newer models replaced old cars and fuelers with driver seats behind the motor replaced the old dragsters, ladies of the race grew their hair longer, wore shorter shorts, and left bras behind. In that environment, with her broad straightened hair and old ’60s gogo boots, Roufs became a common choice for companies wanting to promote their products.

Her photographs appeared in branded t-shirts and ad magazines in those years, and many people claimed Roufs brought life to the drag race. She held titles like the queen of the 6th annual US Professional Dragster Championship at Orange County International Raceway and the 1973 Professional Dragster Association queen.

In her personal life, Roufs welcomed a child named Jet Dougherty with an unknown husband when she was 29. Her daughter came out years later on social media when photographer Tom West uploaded the trophy girl’s early photos on Facebook in 2016.

With a comment paying tribute to her mother, Jet explained that Roufs would be proud to see her pictures on the internet and let people know that she died in January 1991. She said the cause of death was suicide but didn’t reveal the reason behind it.

The 2019 film ‘Ford V Ferrari’ portrayed the historical competition between the two companies, also touching upon the death of Ford’s racing driver, Ken Miles. But, while it outlined the incident, the film didn’t delve into the speculations surrounding his death.

‘Ford V Ferrari’ showed the J Ford car going out of control due to a brake failure while Miles was testing it at the California Riverside International Raceway during the 1966 Le Mans while a part of the racer’s death statement read:

“The car went off the track at the easiest curve to negotiate, a spokesman said, which drew speculation that the accident may have been caused by a mechanical failure.”

‘Go Like Hell’ author A.J. Baime supported this claim by writing that ‘driver error was out of the question’ in Miles’ case. Revealing what happened after the car crash, he held a second party responsible as follows:

“Ford’s Aerospace division, Aeronutronic, was sending in a team to study the wreckage…Every piece of wreckage was examined as if it were a flight crash investigation. But the car was so severely destroyed by impact and fire nothing could be proven, and the Ford Motor Company had its image to uphold…In the end, all the evidence proved inconclusive. To this day, the cause of the accident that killed Ken Miles has never been determined.”

Years later, an article from Car And Driver presented a different angle. It mentioned retired cop Fred Jones’ claims that Miles survived the accident and settled in Wisconsin.

Jones explained that Ford paid their driver to disappear and pretend to be dead after the failed test as they didn’t want ‘a badly injured survivor from their car crashes to be in public.’

On the other hand, according to the article, Carroll Shelby’s assistant, Phil Remington, told the retired officer that Miles was killed in the 1966 accident. So, the specifics of the racer’s death remained unclear throughout the years.

Still, the incident led Ford to redesign the J-car and name it GT40 MK, with additions for driver’s safety.

In a recent chat with TSN’s Corwin McCallum, Niall Horan not only talked about his new album ‘The Show’ but also shared his go-to track while he golfs. The pop star gave a shout-out to Don Henley and said:

“No, just like classic rock from the 70s. I listen to a lot of that. I would listen to a lot of that stuff and just let it rip.’The Boys Of Summer’ by Don Henley. It’s always a cracker for a sunny day on a golf course.”

Niall has been known to be a superfan of The Eagles. The singer even shared with Young Hollywood in 2017, that he went to Henley for advice, especially after his former band, One Direction, announced their hiatus at the end of 2015. Niall expressed:

“Don Henley and I talk every couple of weeks or so. It’s mad. I call him ‘Dad’. He calls me ‘Son’.”

It seems that Niall isn’t the only one enjoying their chats, as Don told Billboard in 2017 that he is fond of the Irish singer. Henley also explained where he sees Horan in the future by adding:

“Niall is a solid guy whose focus is right where it ought to be: on songwriting. He’s got the Irish charm and a healthy, self-effacing sense of humor, which is an essential ­survival tool in this business. I think that Niall will evolve into a resonant, thoughtful voice for his generation.”

The story of Desiree Washington and Mike Tyson remains a controversial chapter in the world of sports and celebrity culture. This article revisits the accusation made by Washington against the former heavyweight boxing champion.

On the morning of July 19, 1991, Desiree, then Miss Black Rhode Island, found herself in an Indianapolis hotel room with Tyson. According to her account, Tyson invited her to his room at the Canterbury Hotel after meeting at a Miss Black America pageant rehearsal. However, a day later, she checked into the emergency room at Methodist Hospital, reporting that she had been raped.

Her testimony painted a picture of the incident, with Tyson allegedly laughing as she sobbed. The subsequent rape trial, which took place in the Marion County Superior Court from January 26 to February 10, 1992, was a high-profile affair. Desiree’s case was supported by corroborating testimony, including that of Tyson’s chauffeur, Virginia Foster. The driver said at the time:

“She [Desiree Washington] looked all frantic like she might have been in a state of shock. She looked dazed, disoriented.”

Furthermore, Thomas Richardson, the emergency room physician who examined Washington more than 24 hours after the incident, confirmed that her physical condition in her genitals was consistent with rape. In his defense, Tyson claimed that the encounter had taken place with Washington’s full consent.

He told before his sentencing:

“I have not raped anyone, tried to rape anyone by any means. I’m sorry for Miss Washington as a person. I by no means meant to hurt her or do anything to her. I’m sure she knows that.”

Throughout the trial, public opinion was divided. Some depicted Washington as a gold digger, motivated by a desire to exploit Tyson’s wealth. The boxer’s supporters labeled her vindictive and jealous.

However, the jury found Desiree to be a credible witness who was telling the truth. Washington acknowledged the challenges she faced, expressing her fears that no one would believe her or think she was solely after financial gain.

On February 10, 1992, the boxer was convicted of the rape charge. He was sentenced to six years in prison on March 26, 1992. Despite being 25 years old at the time of the crime, Tyson was incarcerated at the Indiana Youth Center (now the Plainfield Correctional Facility) in April 1992. He was released in March 1995 after serving less than three years.

The aftermath of this incident had consequences for Washington. Her personal life was impacted, leading to her parents’ divorce, and her siblings faced difficulties at school as the event became a source of criticism for her family.

In the years since the trial, Desiree has chosen to maintain a low profile and keep most aspects of her personal life private. As of now, there is limited public information about her, except that she is 47 years old, born in 1973. At the time of the incident in July 1991, she was 18 years old.
