KISS bassist Gene Simmons recently spoke about misconceptions surrounding his wealth and reflected on fellow rock legend Ozzy Osbourne during an appearance on Fail Better With David Duchovny. “People think I’m much richer than I actually am. I mean, I’ve done okay, but [they say], ‘Oh, you must have billions.’ No, I don’t,” Simmons said. “It’s just that thing. And I like that thing because it means you might not be hurt as much, ’cause there are a lot of people who are out to get you, because they have empty lives; I don’t know why.”

He then turned to the subject of humility and shared his admiration for Ozzy Osbourne.

“But humbling — it’s important for people like yours truly… It is important to meet somebody like Ozzy, who is just himself, whether — now, of course, when he gets up on stage, it’s more like scream therapy,” Simmons continued. “You get out there and it’s just all energy coming, but strangely, the real Ozzy — he’s supposed to be the Prince Of Darkness, and yet in the shows he blows kisses to the fans and goes, ‘I love you.’ If you were the Prince Of Darkness, that’s like anti — that’s kind of like a good guy. He was a giant.”

Despite downplaying his fortune, Simmons’ financial success remains substantial. Finance Monthly reported his net worth to be around $400 million in 2025.

His wealth extends well beyond music. Parade noted that KISS’s licensing ventures — spanning merchandise like lunch boxes, comic books, and even pinball machines — have brought in over $1 billion since the 1970s. Paul Stanley celebrated his bandmate Gene Simmons’ birthday from his Twitter. In his tweet, he credited Gene for KISS’ existence:

“Wishing the happiest birthday to my partner and brother. Fifty four years together and fifty years of KISS that never would have been possible without you Gene. Enjoy your day.”

In a February interview, Stanley praised Simmons, and how his qualities affect KISS positively:

“Gene is a team player, and he loves the band, and wants what’s best for it, even if it’s not always what’s best for him. I love that Gene’s ability to put his own advantages and possibilities within the band by the side to do whatever is best for the collective. I admire that quality, because it’s you don’t find it that often in people.”

Paul also emphasised the difference between Gene’s on-stage persona and his real life personality:

“Also, underneath all the bravado and all the ‘Gene Simmons’ schtick is a very caring, and very kind and giving person, who takes care of a lot of people, far outside and beyond his family. I respect that very much.”
