On the new episode of Raised on Radio, Graham Nash talked about how Crosby, Stills and Nash came to be, and who was there to witness it. The harmony singer set the scene at Joni Mitchell’s house, after a dinner with David Crosby and Steven Stills:

“After dinner, David looked at Steven, he said ‘Hey, play Willie that song that we were working on.’ Now, David had been thrown out of the Birds, and the Buffalo Springfield had broken up and they were trying to work on an Everly Brothers kind of duo kind of thing.”

Graham revealed which song that was and its importance, and told the story of how he got gradually impressed:

“So they sang this song, and it was a song called ‘You Don’t Have To Cry,’ which was on the first Crosby Stills and Nash record. And they sang it, they looked at me, I said ‘First of all, Stephen, that’s an incredibly great song. That’s just wonderful, sing it again.’ They looked at each other, they shrugged, they sang it again.”

Nash also inserted himself into the scene by counting the things he observed, and explained why the song was escalated when Crosby and Stills sang the song third time:

“When they got to the second time I said ‘Okay.’ I’m a pretty decent harmony singer, I’ve learned my part, I know the words, I know David’s body language, I knew when Stephen was going to start and end a phrase, I’m good at what I do, I’ve been doing it for fifty years, you know, by that time. They sang it the third time and after fourty-five seconds, we had to stop and start laughing.”

He finally mentioned why the band had to form after that moment, and revealed that Joni Mitchell was there:

“We had never heard a vocal sound like me and David and Stephen making our three voices into one voice. And we knew that the Hollies and the Birds and the Springfield were decent harmony bands, but this was something completely different. And Joni was the only witness.”

Graham Nash previously talked about his deeply rooted friendship with David Crosby. In another interview, he mentioned the main reason why they were successfull as a harmony band:

“I loved that part of our relationship – the trust that we had with each other. I would say the trust came from being deep friends. It’s because we were so close together – I mean, we could really harmonize, you know. We had a wonderful time. It was great making that particular piece of music [‘Where Will I Be’] because I wanted to stay out of David’s way because he was talking to you or your heart directly, and I only came in when I felt it needed to take another breath.”

Graham Nash once again opened up about his late friend and bandmate David Crosby in a recent interview. During the interview with iNews, Nash expressed sadness that they had only started to reconcile before Crosby’s passing due to COVID-19, mentioning that they had planned to have a Facetime call which never happened:

“At the end, there, we were getting together. We were emailing each other and voicemailing each other. [I needed to apologize for] shooting off my mouth. [We set up a FaceTime] where we could see each other’s faces. I waited and waited, and he never called. And then he was gone.”

The musician was asked what he wanted to say to his friend. He revealed:

“That we made a lot of beautiful music. We had a lot of great times. Why don’t we get back to that?”

Nash clarified that he doesn’t regret the bitterness between the two and admitted something about his long-time friend:

“I don’t regret anything, actually. David and I, our animosity towards each other was very genuine. There are reasons that I’ll never tell. But he is – sorry, he was – one of the great musicians in the world. Completely unique. I have to admit that.”

In an earlier interview, Nash revealed that he would have accepted making peace with his late friend and clarified that he was sure it would have been sincere.

Though the two musicians reconnected before Crosby’s passing away, Crosby had caused a heated beef after making mocking comments about Neil Young’s girlfriend. Despite Crosby’s apology for the comments he had made, the friendship of the two fell apart. With their final interaction being via email, the two couldn’t patch up their friendship in a proper way.

Graham Nash and Stephen Stills took to Instagram and wrote captions to pay their respects to their late bandmate David Crosby on August 14, which would have been Crosby’s 82nd birthday.

Stephen posted a photo of Crosby playing the guitar. He celebrated his late friend and band mate with the opening lyrics of the Crosby & Nash track ‘Carry Me.’ He wrote:

“When I was a young man I found an old dream,

Was as battered and worn a one as you have ever seen.

But I made it some new wings and painted the nose,

And I wished so hard up in the air I rose, singing…

 Carry me above the world

 Remembering David Crosby today and every day.”

On the other hand Graham posted a photo of them performing together and wrote the caption that read:

“What to say besides how much I miss him? Thinking of you, David. Remembering these moments, the smiles, the laughter… the music.”

Even though Nash and Crosby had rough patches in their relationship over the years, they had almost made amends when Crosby reached out to apologize for his behavior. The pair had even scheduled a FaceTime call that never happened as Crosby suddenly passed away due to Covid-19 complications.

Graham Nash recently told Amanpour and Company that he and David Crosby had nearly reconciled just before he passed away. The singer explained that Crosby reached out to him to apologize for his words. Graham explained:

“About eight days before David [Crosby] passed away, he sent me an email and said, ‘I want to talk to you. I know I haven’t spoken to you in two years, but we need to talk. I need to apologize.’ So I set up a time to use FaceTime where we could see each other. I waited, and I waited for the call, and the call never came, but we were talking towards the end. I realized that he had to apologize for shooting his mouth off, particularly about Neil [Young] and his wife Daryl Hannah, and me.”

Even though the FaceTime call never happened, Graham was thankful to know that Crosby wanted to make amends. He continued:

“I’m incredibly grateful that he wanted to straighten things out between us because we had been friends for so long and had been through many things together. But David Crosby was an incredible musician; he tuned his guitar in many different ways; he was jazz, and Everly Brothers influenced. David Crosby was a great musician, and I will miss him and think about him every day for the rest of my life.”

However, it seems that Crosby did leave a voicemail to Nash before he passed away that the singer decided to keep to himself. He shared his thoughts about the voicemail by saying:

“He did leave me a voicemail, I’ll never erase, saying he wanted to talk. He wanted to apologize for shooting off his mouth about many things, including Neil Young and Daryl Hannah.”
