Paramore’s lead singer Hayley Williams has openly identified Morgan Wallen as the subject of her criticism during a recent appearance on the New York Times’ Popcast.

In the discussion, Williams was questioned about the opening line of her song “Ego Death,” which mentions “the biggest star at this racist country singer’s bar.” When asked to clarify who she meant, Williams replied without hesitation: “It could be a couple, but I’m always talking about Morgan Wallen,” she said. “I don’t give a shit. Find me at Whole Foods, bitch, I don’t care. I just don’t care.”

She went on to elaborate on why she continues to speak out about social issues. “When you’re passionate about something and you really believe in something and you have the will to spread that, talk about it,” she said. “I’m never not ready to scream at the top of my lungs about racial issues. I think because it’s so intersectional, it overlaps with everything from climate change to LGBTQA+ issues.”

Williams’ remarks refer to a 2021 controversy that deeply impacted the country music world. According to the Los Angeles Times, Morgan Wallen was caught on video using the N-word outside his Nashville home following a night out with friends. The footage, obtained and released by TMZ, showed him shouting the racial slur and other expletives while approaching his driveway.

The fallout was immediate and severe. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, Wallen was banned from the two largest country radio networks and a major television network, his songs were removed from major streaming playlists, and his record label suspended him. He was also disqualified from several major country music awards, including the Academy of Country Music Awards.

Soon after the video surfaced, Wallen issued a public apology on Instagram, calling his actions “unacceptable and inappropriate.” In a 2023 interview, he reiterated his regret, saying, “There’s no excuse” for what he said.

The scandal triggered widespread debate in the country music community about racism and accountability. Saving Country Music noted that artists including Kane Brown and Jimmie Allen acknowledged Wallen’s wrongdoing while suggesting that some media portrayals lacked full context—though both made clear they condemned the slur entirely.

The Popcast interview also touched on other topics, such as the current status of Paramore, Williams’ solo career, and her experience touring with Taylor Swift.

In the middle of promoting Paramore’s ‘This Is Why‘ through a world tour that will last until late 2024, Hayley Williams appeared on a new episode of the ‘Black People Love Paramore’ podcast. When asked about her love for Lil Wayne and her favorite song from his catalog, she explained:

“So, my intro to hip-hop as a kid was like ‘Cash Money.’ You know what I mean? Like, Southern hip-hop in that time period was so cool. I mean, I feel like I got lucky with what I was introduced to. So, it’s not even just so much Lil Wayne, but it’s like Hot Boys and his verse on like ‘#1 Stunna.’ ‘#1 Stunna’ was probably my favorite song when I played basketball.”

The vocalist revealed how the rapper inspired her career:

“But it’s crazy, too, because Lil Wayne was so young, and I was like a kid from Mississippi that knew in the back of my head that I wanted to do music someday. I was like, ‘He’s tiny, and he’s doing this s**t. So, it’s gotta be possible.’ Even though I knew that was not gonna look like my career at all, it gave me some sense of hope. I feel like that’s why I probably have brought him up before. But anyway. ‘#1 Stunna,’ though. I mean, again, I know it’s not a Lil Wayne song but the feature.”

While discussing her debut album in a chat with Okay Player in 2020, Williams admitted some Black artists’ influence on her work. As she went for a different style with Paramore, the singer mentioned that her early inspirations affected her music more and more as time passed. Then, giving a few names, she said:

“‘Petals For Armor‘ — the first two references I gave to Taylor [Yorke] and to Joey [Howard] while we were writing was Solange and Sade. I really would’ve thought those influences would’ve come through even more than they did, but my love for Björk and Thom Yorke was more evident.”

She went on to include Lil Wayne in the list again:

“I think being from the south, too, there are things that just aren’t gonna show through. Like, I was obsessed with Juvenile, Outkast, and Lil Wayne in the sixth grade. That’s what I was listening to with my girlfriends on the basketball team. The same with TLC and Aaliyah.”

Paramore has been on tour since late May to support their latest album ‘This Is Why.’ When asked by Vogue which night of the summer tour has been her favorite, Hayley Williams mentioned their show in Houston, where she covered Beyonce’s ‘I Miss You.’

Here’s what Williams said about the ‘most underrated’ album from Queen Bey:

“[Beyoncé] ‘s album ‘4,’ to me, is one of the most underrated pop R&B albums. If I am a little teensy bit high and listening to Beyoncé, I’ll go on a rant about how underrated she is.”

She continued:

“As famous as she is, and as long as she’s been in this business, her voice, her artistry, and she arranges all the vocals on her albums, she still underrated to me.”

Besides having their headlining tour that will wrap up at the start of August, Paramore was also a part of Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour,’ which will run through August. When Taylor made the announcement last year on Instagram, she wrote:

“Feeling like the luckiest person alive because I get to take these brilliant artists out on tour with me: Paramore, Beabadoobee, Phoebe Bridgers, Girl In Red, MUNA, HAIM, Gracie Abrams, GAYLE, and OWENN. I can’t wait to see your gorgeous faces out there. It’s been a long time coming.”

Paramore’s Hayley Williams recently talked to Dazed Digital about her band’s collaborations with Taylor Swift and her personal relationship with the pop singer. The frontwoman, who contributed to a new version of Swift’s ‘Castles Crumbling’ from ‘Speak Now,’ explained their friendship, saying:

“Brian and I were talking about doing something around the time that the song that I sang on with Taylor comes out to celebrate her and the fact that she was the first friend that I made in the industry, really. It’s very meaningful to me to still know her now that we’re adult women. We’re still traversing through this life and through the industry.”

The two’s professional work together included live performances, too. Earlier this year, Swift announced that Paramore would be joining her for some dates on ‘The Eras Tour.’ She shared the news on her Instagram and wrote:

“The first leg of the tour will be in stadiums across the U.S., with international dates to be announced as soon as we can! Feeling like the luckiest person alive because I get to take these brilliant artists out on tour with me: Paramore, Beabadoobee, Phoebe Bridgers, Girl In Red, MUNA, HAIM, Gracie Abrams, GAYLE, and OWENN. I can’t wait to see your gorgeous faces out there. It’s been a long time coming.”

In response, referring to their ship name to celebrate, Williams posted the following on her own account:

“So it’s called Tayley, and there’s a whole blog about us.”

Currently, Taylor Swift is in the middle of her tour, while Paramore is on the road for upcoming U.S. shows to promote their latest album ‘This Is Why.‘ After concluding their U.S. shows in August, they have plans to perform in Australia and New Zealand in November.

Hayley Williams of Paramore shared some news in one of her most recent Instagram posts. Williams, sharing a picture of Taylor Swift from her early years, congratulated her for finally legitimately owning her third studio album, ‘Speak Now’. The description said:

“Taylor was the first industry friend I ever made and hung out with outside of work things. When Speak Now dropped, I bought my friend’s record (as you do!) and listened to the whole thing in my first car, sitting still in the driveway. It’s my favorite Taylor Swift album for so many reasons. I wish I could go back to this moment on my 21st birthday and tell her one day, she’ll legitimately own Speak Now, and we’ll get to sing together on one of the songs. Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) is out July 7th.”

Swift had to re-release the original tracks from ‘Speak Now’ since she wasn’t given a chance to buy her own masters. The singer, according to SB Projects owner Scooter Braun, needed to sign another contract, requiring her to record six more albums under the label in exchange for the masters of the first six, which she considered ‘unacceptable.’

Getting ready to release the new version, the album will have the re-recorded tracks, along with a new track called ‘From The Vault’, featuring Williams and Fall Out Boy.

Hayley Williams of Paramore recently spoke to Vanity Fair about upcoming shows, her style, politics, and more. Experimenting with different sounds in each record, the band’s latest album, ‘This Is Why,’ was also a change for the band. But apparently, Williams couldn’t see all the difference before the fans pointed it out. She explains:

“I think fans kind of nailed it before I could. I find it interesting that I couldn’t see that myself. Can you fit things in one of two categories, or should there be infinite categories? Are people good or evil, or are they good and evil? Are we all capable of the same terrible things as much as we’re all capable of the same incredible things?”

The frontwoman complains about the one thing she doesn’t like about the music industry. She goes:

“We aren’t one thing or another. Once Paramore as a band understood that we don’t have to fit into this or that and we can just follow the feelings and trust it, that’s when we found a lot more freedom onstage, in the studio, with our fans.”

Still, to this day, Paramore has been making music and going on tours for 20 years. Starting on 20th May, their North American tour will end in St. Paul, Minnesota, on 2nd August. To see further details of the tour, click here.
