Nick Cave recently opened up about grief and revealed what he believes grief is. During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, while talking about grief and resembling it to love, he admitted that he refused to focus on his pain after losing his sons and concentrated on himself and his music instead.

Cave lost his son Arthur in 2015 after he fell from a cliff in Sussex at the age of 15. Following his passing, he also lost his oldest son, Jethro Lazenby, in 2022 with an unknown cause of death.

The singer was asked whether or not he believes in ‘acceptance’ as the final stage of grief according to the Kübler-Ross model. The five stages of the model include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, which Cave thinks is ‘full of sh*t.’ He shared his thoughts on grief:

“Grief, like love, is a mess. Grief manifests as awesome and Godlike. It was not about ‘acceptance,’ which suggests a kind of ultimate returning to business as usual, rather it is an obliterating force that requires a kind of transmutation of being, where we turn from one thing into another thing.”

The rocker decided not to focus on his own ‘wounds’ after the grief he has been through.

“The experience of losing my two sons was a reordering of one’s essential being. Ultimately, if we are lucky, we stop focusing on our own wounds and look to the wounds of the world.”

Cave believes that experiencing grief makes people value things and people and admitted that his experience with losing his two sons has been the same.

His grief didn’t stop him from maintaining his music career; in fact, it helped him shape it through albums. In his Bad Seeds albums, ‘Ghosteen’ and ‘Skeleton Tree,’ the rocker dealt with the grief of losing his younger son.

Nick Cave recently shared his thoughts on his trans fans. On his Red Hand Files website, where the singer regularly receives and answers questions, he received a question about his views on having transgender fans. The question read:

“How do you feel about your transgender fans or trans people in general? As a young trans woman, I’ve had equally positive and negative gender-related experiences with other fans of your work and stand curious as to where you stand on things.”

After answering another question about the Enneagram test results, the singer opened up about equality towards all people:

“I also have another impulse, which I hope is more common, and that is to treat everyone with equal love and respect, regardless of their race, gender, sexuality, religion, or anything else. I essentially see the world as a collection of individuals, each unique in their brokenness, who have at their core a common and binding sameness of spirit.”

Cave then turned his attention to the trans fans and shared his love and gratitude for them:

“So, Amelia, although I am slightly uncertain as to where I am supposed to stand on such things, or rather why I am supposed to stand anywhere, I will say this – I love my trans fans fully and wish them the best, as I love all my fans and wish them the best. I feel toward them that same duty of care that I feel toward all those who exist within my sphere.”

He concluded with the following:

“I also wish for them to receive every right inherent to them and for them to lead lives of dignity and freedom, devoid of violence and prejudice. I wish these things as I wish them for all people.”

The musician also stated that it is a privilege to have a diverse audience in his shows that unite and bond over music.

The Bad Seeds hasn’t released a new album since their latest record in 2019, ‘Ghosteen.’ Cave also shared solo music in 2021 with the album ‘Seven Psalms.’ Moreover, the singer recently revealed that he is finishing a new album with the band by answering a fan question on the website.

The release date for the album hasn’t been announced yet.

In a recent chat with The Louis Theroux Podcast, The Bad Seeds frontman Nick Cave recalled his 1995 collaboration with Kylie Minogue for the track ‘Where The Wild Roses Grow.’ The rocker shared a confession about that time; he explained:

“I certainly wasn’t in showroom condition. Her management was like, ‘This is a bad idea’ because we were a bunch of dark drug-addicted monstrosities… but she was determined to do that [the song].”

The duo performed together; however, Cave added that he doesn’t recall most of the performance by saying:

“We have stayed very good friends. I can’t remember too much about being on ‘Top of the Pops’ with her, but I [was high] for sure, of course. I couldn’t have done it otherwise.”

After performing their song live on ‘Top of the Pops’ in 1995, the two friends came together and sang ‘Where The Wild Roses Grow’ many times. Nick and Kylie also performed at Glastonbury‘s Pyramid Stage in 2019, where she was given the ‘Legends Slot’ by organizers Michael and Emily Eavis. It was also Kylie’s comeback after she had to cancel her headline spot in 2005 due to her breast cancer diagnosis.
