On the new episode of Raised on Radio, Graham Nash talked about how Crosby, Stills and Nash came to be, and who was there to witness it. The harmony singer set the scene at Joni Mitchell’s house, after a dinner with David Crosby and Steven Stills:

“After dinner, David looked at Steven, he said ‘Hey, play Willie that song that we were working on.’ Now, David had been thrown out of the Birds, and the Buffalo Springfield had broken up and they were trying to work on an Everly Brothers kind of duo kind of thing.”

Graham revealed which song that was and its importance, and told the story of how he got gradually impressed:

“So they sang this song, and it was a song called ‘You Don’t Have To Cry,’ which was on the first Crosby Stills and Nash record. And they sang it, they looked at me, I said ‘First of all, Stephen, that’s an incredibly great song. That’s just wonderful, sing it again.’ They looked at each other, they shrugged, they sang it again.”

Nash also inserted himself into the scene by counting the things he observed, and explained why the song was escalated when Crosby and Stills sang the song third time:

“When they got to the second time I said ‘Okay.’ I’m a pretty decent harmony singer, I’ve learned my part, I know the words, I know David’s body language, I knew when Stephen was going to start and end a phrase, I’m good at what I do, I’ve been doing it for fifty years, you know, by that time. They sang it the third time and after fourty-five seconds, we had to stop and start laughing.”

He finally mentioned why the band had to form after that moment, and revealed that Joni Mitchell was there:

“We had never heard a vocal sound like me and David and Stephen making our three voices into one voice. And we knew that the Hollies and the Birds and the Springfield were decent harmony bands, but this was something completely different. And Joni was the only witness.”

Graham Nash previously talked about his deeply rooted friendship with David Crosby. In another interview, he mentioned the main reason why they were successfull as a harmony band:

“I loved that part of our relationship – the trust that we had with each other. I would say the trust came from being deep friends. It’s because we were so close together – I mean, we could really harmonize, you know. We had a wonderful time. It was great making that particular piece of music [‘Where Will I Be’] because I wanted to stay out of David’s way because he was talking to you or your heart directly, and I only came in when I felt it needed to take another breath.”

Demi Lovato recently appeared in an episode of The Howard Stern Show and talked about whether her ‘Cool for The Summer’ track was written to a woman. Demi reminded Howard that the song was released before she came out as a bisexual. When Stern asked if Lovato’s management intervened in her coming out experience, she answered:

“No, no.”

She then further explained the real reason why her coming out was later than the song release, and she told how her father reacted:

“I just grew up in a Christian home and was kind of traumatized in that area, didn’t want to come out. And when I came out, my dad was like ‘Yeah, you have a song called ‘Cool For The Summer.'”

Stern asked whether her crush is a celebrity, she said:

“What if she is? Yeah [she is famous].”

When Howard questioned why Demi is sensitive about keeping her name private, she pointed out her relationship with Jutes:

“This was never public, no. I’m in a relationship now and I feel like that would be inappropriate.”

Demi was evasive about the questions in a tongue-in-cheek way. She quickly said:

“I missed the moment, should have said it back then.”

Demi Lovato came together with their partner Jutes in the beginning of 2022 and Jutes worked as a songwriter in their now previous album ‘HOLY FVCK.’ In a recent interview, Demi mentioned how good and healthy their relationship feels like, praising Jutes:

“I’m in an amazing relationship. My boyfriend is a year older than me, and we’re growing together and it feels so healthy. We actually met in the studio. So he’s an artist, but he’s also a songwriter. He came in to write on one of my sessions and I was in the studio and was immediately attracted to him. I like texted my friends on the side and was like, ‘He’s so hot!'”

Former Judas Priest guitarist K.K Downing appeared on an episode of Metal Pilgrim and he talked about how he came to terms with former Iron Maiden vocalist Paul Di’Anno, telling the story of when and where it happened:

“Yeah, well first I think myself and Paul kissed and made up in about 1986, I think. We were in a hotel room, we were on tour and Bon Jovi were at the opening act and we were there and I think Doc McGee was there, their manager and everything.”

Downing also mentioned what they did with Paul to make their ‘hiccup’ go away:

“And Paul was there, so we had this wonderful moment where we called each other a lot of names and then we had a beer and kissed and made up, so we’re all good.”

The guitarist also told how he decided to invite him to KK’s Priest’s upcoming tour, and explained that he was impressed by the atmosphere Di’Anno created in his shows while he was in the wheelchair due to his bad knee:

“I think the main reason was I actually saw Paul. I don’t know how it happened but I saw him playing some shows in South America and the fans were just going crazy. And that was so wonderful to see. It was so heartwarming, really. Because Paul was in the wheelchair, hopefully, he will literally be on his feet at some point in the future I’ve heard but I think this guy’s got so much to give still, these fans are so passionate. I had the idea of really inviting Paul on to do some shows and I’m excited about that.”

The so-called ‘hiccup’ between two bands goes back as far as 40 years, when they were supposed to tour together. K.K. came across Paul’s interview, in which he said ‘We will blow [Judas Priest’s] b*llocks off.’ He wrote about his initial reaction in his book ‘Heavy Duty: Days and Nights in Judas Priest’:

“Who the fuck are this lot? I’m just there thinking there are so many bands that would be grateful for the tour. Why should we give it to these bands if that’s their attitude? But that’s a big statement to make. And it didn’t happen, that’s for sure! It didn’t happen, it just created an atmosphere.”

In a 2021 interview, Downing said that Paul later apologised for the remarks he made, and now they’re going on ‘Prieststhe , Killers & Witches’ tour, starting from October 7th until October 12th.

An interview of late guitarist Bernie Marsden has recently been released, in which he talked about his ‘Rock God.’ Bernie began the interview:

“Hi, my name is Bernie Marsden and my rock god is Peter Green.”

Then he started telling about the first time he heard Peter’s performance and the first time he saw him live. He also mentioned that the early ’70s were a lucrative time to learn how to be a musician:

“I first saw Peter Green play live when I was about sixteen years old when I went to a gig in North London to see Fleetwood Mac. But the first time I heard him was with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, where he did the impossible job of replacing Eric Clapton. So his name was straight up there with Jeff Baker and all the other guitar players. It was a great time to be learning my craft.”

Marsden also praised Fleetwood Mac and emphasised how Green’s songwriting influenced him and changed his perspective, along with the band’s musical influences on him:

“What really grabbed me was Fleetwood Mac. His singing, his harmonica playing, obviously his guitar playing were a great influence on me.

But really, it was the songwriting that I thought was very very special. And when he reached the pique where he was writing ‘Oh Well,’ ‘The Green Manalish,’ ‘Man of The World,’ and of course, the great big hit ‘Albatross.’ I just realised that playing the guitar was one thing, but also to be able to write good songs, hopefully great songs was going to be very important in this world.”

He also mentioned that he witnessed Peter’s last performance with Fleetwood Mac and that he followed his solo career afterward:

“I followed Fleetwood Mac as much as I could, I followed them around the country, and then suddenly, I saw the last gig he did which was at the Bath Music Festival. And he left the band, and I never really came to grips with it. He made a solo album after that called ‘End of The Game’ which was some great playing, and I think he’s vastly underrated and not many people got a good listen to it, this great playing.”

Lastly, Bernie told the story of how he met Peter in person:

“I know he went into a kind of decline and he disappeared for many many years but I tried to keep in touch with him and fortunately I was in a band called Babe Ruth and the drummer in Babe Ruth had gone to school with Peter. One night he said ‘A friend of mine is coming to the gig’ and that friend of his was Peter Green so I met him again that time.”

Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green passed away on July 25th, 2020, aged 73 and former Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden passed away on August 28th, 2023. Bernie wasn’t the only musician who chose Peter as an idol. Earlier this year, Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson praised Peter and picked him as his ‘guitar hero’:

“In the early Fleetwood Mac days, Peter Green had a real soulful quality. He could make a guitar sing like a human voice. Peter had this wonderful tone, wonderful control. He could play a lot of notes when the music warranted it, otherwise, he seduced you with quality rather than quantity.”

Noel Gallagher received a six months driving ban and a £1,340 worth of fine due to a number of unpaid speeding tickets. Although Noel doesn’t have a driver’s licence, it appears that the vehicle was registered under his name, making him responsible. In a letter, Gallagher clarified that he was unaware of the tickets and took action as soon as he was notified:

“I did not personally receive the notice or the reminder, and neither were brought to my attention by my staff. Once my management team notified me about the receipt of the court documentation concerning this matter, the original notice was completed, identifying the driver, and returned.”

Noel also stated that he takes full responsibility, and he is ready to take action:

“I acknowledge that it is my responsibility as the registered keeper of a motor vehicle to ensure that suitable and effective arrangements are in place to safeguard against important correspondence not being dealt with as required.”

The former Oasis frontman once mentioned that he was arrested in his teenage years. In a 2021 interview, Noel mentioned that he feels neutral when he reflects on the times that led him to commit crimes:

“They were bleak times. There wasn’t a great deal to do apart from get into trouble – smoke weed, sniff glue, listen to music, go to football. That was it. I don’t look back on them with any romance whatsoever. But then again when I look back on them, they don’t fill me with any dread either – it was just growing up.”

He also mentioned that his record remain till this day, and jokingly implied his incompetence in thievery:

“I was arrested a few times for shoplifting, robbery, all of which f*cking haunt me to this day. I’ve still got a police record. If you’re caught three times, you pretty much know that you’re not destined for a life of crime.”

Royal Blood’s Mike Kerr recently had an interview with NME and talked about how Royal Blood’s vision has evolved over the years. Regarding the duo’s ambitions when they first started, Mike explained that their success was unexpected, and their focus wasn’t solely artistic:

“We didn’t have any ambitions really. It was all fast and very surprising. [The success] still baffles me. At that time there wasn’t much rock music and when we were recording, there was this sense that, ‘No one likes this [type of music] anymore, let’s do it anyway.’We had spent like £300 recording ‘Figure It Out,’ ‘Hole’ and ‘Come On Over.’ The only ambition we had was to make that money back, because otherwise it would have been a waste of time and money.”

In terms of their current ambitions, Kerr revealed that they’re having fun and enjoying what they do now:

“It’s about feeling rather than knowing where we want to go. Right now, we feel like we’re playing our best and we’re at a really strong point creatively. As soon as that feeling goes, it’s time to take a break or stop because the queue is out the door for what we do. The driving force for us is that we actually love what we do.”

Royal Blood’s fourth studio album, ‘Back To The Water Below,’ just came out on September 1st. In the interview, when asked whether the duo had a specific vision in mind while making the album, Kerr said:

“I don’t think we knew what we were going to make. Some of the songs were written while we were touring [2021’s ‘Typhoons’] and we carried on as soon as we got off the road. It was a process of discovery. What’s fun about making records is not knowing where you’re going, until it’s too late.”

In a separate interview, the frontman revealed the main point in ‘Back To The Water Below’ and its differences from their previous albums:

“For the first time, I feel like you can play every song on a piano or an acoustic guitar and the songs would survive being presented in different ways. Previously on other records, there are songs led by the riff or the muscle or strength of being heavy or loud. This record is all about the song, and that’s always been the thing since the beginning.”

He also mentioned how their ideas as musicians differentiate from current rock fans:

“One thing that always annoys people is a catchy rock song. They’ll be like, ‘How dare you attempt to write a pop song while wearing a guitar?’ To us, that’s always been the point – making things that stick with you.”

Miley Cyrus recently spoke with People Magazine and opened up about her now-finished relationship with Liam Hemsworth. Miley mentioned that the foundation of their marriage wasn’t solely based on positive aspects:

“Me and Liam’s commitment to being married, of course came from a place of love first because we had been together for 10 years, but also from a place of trauma and just trying to rebuild as quickly as we could.”

She also revealed the moment when she realized she didn’t want to continue with the relationship:

“The day of the [Glastonbury] show was the day I had decided it was no longer going to work in my life to be in that relationship. That was another moment where the work, the performance, the character came first. I guess that’s why it’s now so important to me for that not to be the case — that the human comes first.”

The Glastonbury Festival in 2019 is significant in this context because on that day, Miley’s plane almost crashed. It is also reported that Hemsworth was supposed to accompany Miley but he didn’t show up.

In another interview, Miley mentioned that the trauma of losing their home in Malibu due to forest fires created a bonding experience between them that led to their marriage:

“Our house burned down. We had been like, engaged—I don’t know if we really ever thought we were actually going to get married, but when we lost our house in Malibu—which if you listen to my voice pre- and post-fire, they’re very different so that trauma really affected my voice.”

In the same interview, regarding why their relationship ended, Miley said:

“There was too much conflict. When I come home, I want to be anchored by someone. I don’t get off on drama or fighting.”

The Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins recently listened to Maneskin’s newest single ‘Honey (Are U Coming?)’ and shared his thoughts on the vocalist Damiano David’s singing style in the recent episode of Justin Hawkins Rides Again. Justin mentioned that the style of ‘Honey’ sounded similar to Cults, and reminded him of a ‘Darkness’ song:

“What does that remind me of? I mean it sounds like the Cults and as everybody knows I’m a huge Cult enthusiast. There’s a Darkness song that’s a bit like that too called ‘Open Fire.’ It’s just that kind of driving. When somebody said 90s earlier I’d suggest maybe earlier than that it’s like a sort of mid-to-late 80s kind of Goth Rocky vibe to the guitar riff.”

Hawkins praised Damiano’s singing and performing skills, emphasising the importance of being in the moment for the frontpeople:

“I really admired Damiano David. I think he’s such a ballsy performer. He really just goes for it and there’s no kind of sense of that sort of uber self-awareness that prevents a lot of singers from being the frontman they could possibly be. He’s not afflicted by that kind of embarrasment, I don’t think. And I always admire that in frontpeople. I think it’s an important trait.”

The Darkness frontman also analysed David’s vocals and mentioned their uniqueness:

“It gives a bit of that sort of what’s that called… An affectation of some sort where the note comes in and sort of flaps in a little bit just after. I think he’s defining his vocal style over the last few releases and now he’s kind of got this thing where you recognise him straight away.”

Justin analysed Damiano’s voice and praised him in the past. In 2022, also on Justin Hawkins Rides Again, he mentioned that when listening to David’s vocals throughout the songs, he could hear it has gotten better. Justin explained the situation as:

“When a vocalist gets busy, and they spend a couple of years just singing hardnearly every night, it can change your voice and round it off in one of two ways it either sort of starts to get raspy, and then you sound more like a roofer than a singer, or you can develop these kinds of husky bits within your range that you can lean on for you know the emotional impact in certain places, and it actually improves you. I think the second thing happened to Damiano. I think he’s gotten better.”

Dolly Parton recently participated in a commemorative podcast celebrating the 10th anniversary of Miley Cyrus’ hit song ‘Wrecking Ball.’ During the podcast, Dolly recounted the first time she encountered the song and likened her reaction to when she first heard Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’:

“I remember the first time I heard ‘Wrecking Ball.’ It hit me the same way it did the first time I heard ‘I Will Always Love You’ by Whitney Houston. I was driving, heard that one, and I almost wrecked. And when I heard ‘Wrecking Ball,’ I almost wrecked again! I thought, when it started into that chorus, I thought it hit me like a wrecking ball. I thought, ‘Well, how great can a song be?'”

In a separate interview in June, Dolly mentioned her participation in Miley’s special ‘Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party’ the previous year and also expressed her love for ‘Wrecking Ball’:

“People just had a fit over it, it got really great reviews. So when I got ready to do this album I said, ‘I’m gonna do ‘Wrecking Ball’ and you’re gonna sing it with me right?’ And she said ‘Well, duh!’ So we did it and that’s one of my favourite tracks on the whole album. I love that song and I love Miley. I think her voice is really beautiful.”

In a 2013 interview, Miley mentioned what Dolly means to her in her life and what she taught her:

“Dolly Parton’s my godmother. She’s taught me a lot about how you treat people. She always says hi to the person on the bottom of the call sheet. I love that.”

In 2021, regarding Dolly Parton’s support for the LGBTQ+ community, Miley said:

“There’s a theory that you shouldn’t meet your heroes, but I wish everyone had the chance to meet Dolly Parton because she’s even better than your sparkliest dreams.”

Queens of The Stone Age released their first album since 2017 ‘In Times New Roman‘ in June, and the ‘QOTSA’ frontman Josh Homme talked about the process of making new albums with Ultimate Classic Rock. Josh mentioned that he takes accountability for the delay, and shared his reasoning:

“For whatever reason, making a Queens record has become more difficult. And that’s certainly my fault. If it was like, ‘Well, who is responsible for that?’ I’d put my hand up amongst the guys. But I think also because I want to put everything I have into it.”

Homme then compared how it feels when working for ‘QOTSA’ to working for Eagles of Death Metal:

“I don’t take myself overly seriously, but I take the process of a Queens record seriously. Like if I’m working with Eagles of Death Metal or producing a record or collaborating in some way, I feel like that’s much easier for me to enjoy that process.”

The frontman also clarified his thought process while making a Queens record:

“And it’s not like I don’t enjoy making a Queens record. It’s just that it always feels a little bit like mountaineering. It feels like an accomplishment and it feels great to do, but it doesn’t feel simple.”

In 2019, Josh Homme went through a divorce and a custody battle. COVID-19 lockdowns on top of that wore Josh out. In an interview in June, he said:

“I felt chained to the floor for the last three years.”

In terms of his songwriting becoming gradually more personal, he said:

“When someone says it’s not personal, I’m like, ‘That’s just the lie you tell yourself, motherfucker.’ If it’s not personal, don’t do it.”

He also mentioned that working for ‘In Times New Roman’ was difficult, but he used it as a distraction from his personal life:

“I think this is the first time I didn’t want to make a record, but I was dealing with a lot of stuff in my personal life. We recorded a lot of stuff. I think I was doing it because when I’m in trouble, this is what I do. This is where I go to get right.”
