Spinal Tap’s Derek Smalls recently chatted with American Songwriter about his new single ‘Must Crush Barbie’ and revealed his anti-inspiration, a bass player he wouldn’t like to sound like. The rocker explained:

“Well, I hate to say this about a rock idol, so to speak. But I thought, I’m never going to be like Paul McCartney with that little—it looks like he’s playing a ukulele or something. It was kind of an anti-inspiration.”

He recalled the one time he played track that kind of sounded like he was playing the ukulele. Derek added:

“And I actually did play a Höfner at one point on ‘Rainy Day Sun,’ the old ‘Tap song. And it did feel like playing the bloody ukulele.”

Aside from his displeasure with McCartney’s ukulele performance, his new track ‘Must Crush Barbie’ came to life from his distaste for all the pink and Barbie he kept seeing everywhere. Smalls shared the story behind the song by adding:

“So, it was like—I turned on the tele and all of a sudden there’s all this pink. And I’m thinking did I die and wake up in a vat of Pepto Bismol or something? And all of a sudden, it’s Barbie, Barbie, Barbie. Barbie this, Barbie that. Barbie something else. And I’m going, what the?!”

The rocker also expressed that he would have wanted a heads up before the movie came out. He said:

“I mean, they didn’t call up and say, ‘Hey Derek, in about 10 months you’re going to see a movie we’re making now that will piss you off!’ None of that.”

Prince’s engineer Susan Rogers recently appeared on the Sunset Sound Recorders podcast and recalled her first conversation with the singer and how he was snobby towards accomplished musicians. She retold the story from the start, from a day that she was fixing his equipment. She explained:

“So I’d been working with him or for him I should say. I’d been his employee for about a week as I recall. I would come in walk into the house through the garage and back door entrance go into this studio do my work and go home at night. I was installing a new console and doing some repairs on his equipment and I didn’t see him.”

She went on to explain her first interaction with Prince and how he ignored her at first. Susan added:

“I was finally finished so I called Sandy Sapioni who was his personal assistant and I said, ‘Sandy, I’m done. Can you tell him?’ She called him and said, ‘All right, she’s done downstairs.’ Prince came downstairs and he didn’t even introduce himself. He came downstairs and I was standing on the landing and he was just a few steps above me and he right away asked, ‘What about this?…’ He asked several questions and I answered. He said, ‘Okay,’ … and he turned to go upstairs.”

Susan added that she wanted to make a lasting first impression so she introduced herself. She recalled:

“There was a little voice in my head that said, ‘Don’t let it start like this, don’t.’ I just moved 2,300 miles. I left every human being I knew on Earth to come here. It’s not going to start like this. I interrupted him and I said’ Excuse me, Prince, I’m Susan Rogers,’ and I stuck my hand out to shake his hand. He… thought that was very formal and very funny and he said, ‘I’m Prince.’ We did this kind of little shaking hands and bowing like two diplomats you know meeting each other.”

Rogers finally spoke about Prince’s outlook towards others musicians, even if they are accomplished. She said:

“He was funny about people and I’m sure others have told you similar stories. He kind of knew often from the get go if he was receptive to knowing them or not. For many people he he was absolutely not receptive to knowing them and there are stories of that happened right here in this room behind me of him being introduced to very famous accomplished musicians and him ignoring them.”

Ed Sheeran was recently on an episode of Conan O’Brien’s podcast, ‘Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.’ The singer recalled the time he got so stoned with Snoop Dogg that he couldn’t even see the rapper blow smoke directly in his face.

Here’s what the ‘Shape of You’ singer recalled about that night when he, his wife, and mother-in-law went to see Snoop perform in Melbourne:

“I don’t really smoke at all. I was in the dressing room and he’s just [smoking] blunt for blunt for blunt for blunt, and I’m like, I guess at some point during the night I have to, just to be like, ‘I smoked with Snoop Dogg.'”

Even though he wasn’t one to smoke, after a bit of back and forth, he wanted to get involved. He added:

“I’ve had a good amount of conversation, so I have a bit, and I’m like, ‘I don’t feel too bad, this is good,’ then I have a bit more…”

By the end of having ‘a bit more,’ Ed shared that he couldn’t see Snoop’s face. He expressed:

“Then I have a bit more…then I have a bit more. I just remember looking at him like, ‘I can’t see right now.'”

Besides Snoop, Ed shared with Conan that he’s also been in a room with Burna Boy. He explained that he was in a similar situation, this time on stage, but he could not fully feel that he was there. Ed said:

“There’s an artist that I work quite a lot with called Burna Boy, and I’d say that’s the most I’ve ever seen anyone ingest weed. It was very much the studio door is closed, and just — smoke, smoke, smoke. I remember walking on stage at the gig, and same thing, like, ‘I’m not quite here.'”

Producer Tony Visconti worked with David Bowie on several of the rocker’s albums throughout the years. In an interview with MOJO, the producer shared how Bowie grew from the first time he met him to produce his album ‘Blackstar’ in 2016.

Tony shared what fame and stardom brought into David’s life by explaining:

“In later years, wealth and fame introduced him to a whole circle of people who were out of my realm: very famous actors, gazillionaires, and all that. He moved into the art world. He could speak eloquently on any subject and fit in anywhere. If [he was with] a bunch of Londoners, he would go back to speaking like he came from Bromley.”

After finishing David’s 2013 album ‘The Next Day’ and starting his next one, ‘Blackstar,’ Tony shared that he was aware that Bowie might not have had much time left in his battle with liver cancer. He added:

“There was a lot of gravity about him in his final years; he was a deep thinker. But when he recorded ‘Blackstar,’ when he knew that his time could be limited, it didn’t stop his sense of humor in any way.”

Even though the singer was ill, he still showed up at the studio to record. Tony expressed:

“He was still very open and friendly. He told everyone, ‘I can’t come to the studio every day for medical reasons.’ But he was still happy as anything to be in the studio.”

Even though Tony is mostly known for his work with David, the producer is coming out with a ‘Produced By Tony Visconti’ box set. The box set will include tracks from Marc Bolan, Thin Lizzy, U2, The Damned, Rick Wakeman and several more artists that Tony had the chance to work with over the years.

Bono’s daughter Eve Hewson has landed the lead role in Apple TV+’s ‘Flora and Son.’ The director, John Carney, recently spoke to Yahoo Entertainment and shared that when he offered the role to Eve, he wasn’t banking on her vocals. He said:

“From the very beginning, she [Eve Hewson] was like, ‘I’m not going to be singing like my dad, you know that, don’t you?’ And I was like, ‘Perfect.’ Because she’s not supposed to be. I never wanted this to be about, ‘Oh, little Flora from the flats sings, and [suddenly] she’s Aretha Franklin. I don’t want to do that story. We’ve seen that story a million times…”

Carney also said that his main incentive was to focus more on Flora as a songwriter and her journey with her son. He added:

“[This] is about what she’s writing and the journey she’s going through and how she hears her son. So she has a songwriter facility maybe in time, but I wanted to ground the character, make it feel very real, and not have her suddenly clutching a bunch of awards saying, ‘Oh, thank you.'”

John said that he is aware that people will be watching to hear Eve’s vocals since she is Bono’s daughter. The director continued:

“So I think Eve sensed that this part needed that humor and that reality, and she told me from the word go, ‘I don’t really play the guitar. I don’t sing like my dad, and is that OK?’ Of course, people are going to be watching it going, ‘Oh, let’s see. It’s Bono’s daughter. Let’s see.'”

However, John revealed that the audience will be pleasantly surprised by Eve’s acting that they won’t focus on her vocals or her guitar playing. He expressed:

“But she distracted you from it. She was like, ‘Don’t look at that. Look over here. Look at me acting.’ And I think that’s brilliant the way she does that. You never go, ‘Oh, she’s not really singing very well.’ You go, ‘This is great.'”

Ghost’s Tobias Forge recently chatted with Metal Hammer about his career in the music industry that span over 25 years. During the interview the frontman also opened up about his first impressions towards The Strokes. The singer shared why he initially hated the band by saying:

“I hated The Strokes when they first came out. Back then, everyone described them as being so natural, that they weren’t interested in being rock stars, and I was like, ‘No. They didn’t wake up looking like that.’ They chose to do that to be rock stars. And they can really play!”

Forge shared that he didn’t agree with public about what the band was about, so when their 2006 album ‘First Impressions Of Earth’ came out his perspective changed. Tobias added:

“Then when ‘First Impressions Of Earth’ came out it was like, ‘There you go! That’s what they really sound like!’ After that, I loved The Strokes, because they were showing they actually did love the music, but a lot of indie rockers treated it like it was their sell-out record.”

Although the album was critiqued for being The Strokes’ ‘sell-out record,’ Tobias shared that he was on board with that version of the band. The frontman had previously shared with Metal Hammer that Ghost also didn’t reach their success without criticisms and years of persistence. He explained:

“One thing that I felt proud over was the fact that we’ve been around for 12 years. We’ve made five records, a bunch of EPs, and I am glad there seems to be a song that has a way of sucking people in. And if they go into our world and like it, there is plenty to find.”

Joe Jonas recently filed for divorce from Sophie Turner after four years of marriage. The couple, who share two daughters, made headlines with the news, which caused fans to speculate reasons for their split.

The Jonas Brothers are currently on the road for ‘The Tour’ and during a moment on stage at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Joe shared a message with fans. He said:

“It’s been a crazy week. I just want to say, if you don’t hear it from these lips, don’t believe it. Okay?”

The singer also thanked fans for their continuous support by adding:

“Thank you, everyone, for the love and support to me and my family. I love you guys.”

There have been many rumors regarding the couple, one being the filing that claimed ‘the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken.’ To break the speculation the couple took to Instagram to share a mutual statement that read:

“Statement from the two of us: ‘After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.'”

However, rumors escalated when claims like, Jonas had access to Ring camera footage of Turner ‘saying and/or doing something that made him realize the marriage was over’ or ‘Sophie likes to party while Joe likes to stay at home’ began circulating. There were even videos of Sophie that resurfaced where she called herself a ‘homebody’ and Joe a ‘social butterfly.’

Even though the reason for the split is not official, it was reported that Jonas and Turner have a prenup in place to protect themselves and their kids.

The Police drummer Stewart Copeland recently chatted with Indulge Express and opened up about the differences between him and his former bandmate Sting. The drummer shared why it is hard for them to make music as a duo by explaining:

“You know, as soon as we [him and Sting] get into a room to try and make music, we are at each other’s throats because we are birds of a different feather. Sting is quiet and deep. I am noisy and shallow. If I’m having a party, having fun, laughing with my goofy friends, I’m going to have fun. I get along well with my chuckle buddies. Sting walks in and suddenly I’m not funny anymore.”

Stewart pointed out that they operate on different frequencies by sharing how Sting is as a person. He expressed:

“If he’s having a moment of beauty and serenity and calmness, I walk in, the bubble is popped. If I’m carrying a beer, I’m probably going to spill it. We are just very different types of people. We love each other, like siblings.”

When it comes to making music and getting into the studio, Stewart admitted that he isn’t what Sting looks for in a drummer. The drummer revealed why he can’t keep ‘steady’ by saying:

“But musically, he needs a steady platform from his drummer and his rhythm section. A steady platform from which he can leap and soar into the sky. I’m not that. I’m World War III. I am a cacophony. That’s what I do. My mission is to burn down the building.”

Copeland had talked about his and Sting’s differences which ultimately led them to part ways in the past. Even though the drummer is aware of their different outlooks, he still chats with Sting. Here’s what Stewart shared when he joined Vintage Rock Pod last year about his relationship with the singer:

“We send each other dumb memes from the internet. Causally, there is the business to discuss, an album release or rerelease, or whatever. So yes, we are in touch. We all understand why we fought, and we don’t need to go there.”

In a recent chat with Guitar World, Tommy Shannon recalled the time The Rolling Stones’ offered him an audition to be their guitarist after Bill Wyman retired. When the interviewer asked if the rumors were true, Shannon said:

“Oh, yeah, that happened. I believe there were something like 17 bass players who auditioned, and I was one of them. I made it to the top three, but I obviously didn’t get the gig.”

Tommy also shared how the experience of auditioning went by adding:

“I went in, knew all the songs, and it felt great. I always loved The Rolling Stones, so that wasn’t an issue; I was very comfortable.”

When asked why he didn’t get the gig, Tommy replied:

“I’m not sure. But I did so well that I remember leaving and thinking, ‘I think I got this gig.’ But it wasn’t meant to be. I guess they liked Darryl Jones better. That was tough because after playing ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash,’ ‘Start Me Up,’ ‘Miss You,’ and some other songs, I really felt like I should have that gig. I still do.”

Even though Rolling Stones chose Darryl Jones over him, the guitarist still believes he would have been a better choice for the part. So he added:

“I still think I would have been the best choice for that band. But they disagreed.”

The Kinks’ Ray Davies sat down with Mojo and opened up about his relationship with The Who’s Pete Townshend. When he was asked whether there was any rivalry between him and Townshend the singer replied:

“No. We were different. We weren’t in the same league (laughs). The High Numbers opened for The Kinks, on several occasions. I always knew they’d be outstanding someday. When I say ‘a different league’ to The Who, I mean we were playing a totally different game.”

Ray shared that his band was in a separate lane from The Who and a few other bands who took a similar path to break into the scene. He added:

“The Kinks were always in their own little world, while The Who, Led Zeppelin, Jimi all went off on that very American journey, very corporate. Pete and I are friends but we don’t push it. We respect each other, and part of that is respecting each other’s privacy.”

When 60’s rock bands made it big in the US, The Kinks were blacklisted after a violent incident between Dave Davies, and drummer Mick Avory during a performance at a TV show. Ray told Mojo that he was initially frustrated that The Kinks were left out from the biggest market.

However Davies also shared that the band’s cancellation brought them a new sense of artistry and a chance to return to their roots. The singer recalled the time The Turtles called them and invited them to the US; he said:

“I remember in the late ’60s one American band [The Turtles] phoned me up after they had a Number 1 hit and said, ‘I want you to fly to America to produce an album for us.’ I said, Why do you want me? I can’t tour in America and my records don’t get played in America. All I can bring you is failure. They said, ‘But there’s poetry in that failure.'”

Although Ray saw the band as a ‘failure’ for a brief moment, he soon realized that they could do anything with their sound moving forward. He continued:

“So The Kinks were allowed to be more poetic because there were no expectations for record companies demanding a certain type of record. We were allowed to be experimental.”
