Former Oasis bassist Andy Bell recently joined an interview with Guitar World and revealed the valuable advice he received from Noel Gallagher.

After explaining that before his audition for Oasis, he had little experience playing the bass guitar and didn’t even own one, Bell said:

“So I couldn’t even try to learn anything before I got there. But I knew the chords to the songs, and I did my best to play the root notes, but I have to say, I probably wasn’t that good on the first run-through.”

He then recalled the suggestion Gallagher made, adding:

“The other thing was that I was playing this bass with my fingers, Noel, and said, ‘Guigsy played with a pick. Try it that way.’ And when I did, I found I could attack the bass in a way that sounded a lot more like Oasis.”

Before joining Oasis, the musician’s main instrument was actually the guitar. So, switching to the bass was expectedly a challenge for him. When asked how his previous experience as a guitarist influenced his approach to playing bass guitar when he became a member of Oasis in a March 2023 interview with Classic Rock History, Bell replied:

“Noel [Gallagher] used to say, ‘Guitarists make the best bass players,’ and I think I know what he means. I loved playing bass in Oasis. It was a whole new world. Never boring!”

Andy replaced Paul McGuigan, who was the original bassist of Oasis and played with the band from 1999 until their breakup in 2009. The bassist is currently a member of Ride and is working on a seventh album with his act.

Noel Gallagher received a six months driving ban and a £1,340 worth of fine due to a number of unpaid speeding tickets. Although Noel doesn’t have a driver’s licence, it appears that the vehicle was registered under his name, making him responsible. In a letter, Gallagher clarified that he was unaware of the tickets and took action as soon as he was notified:

“I did not personally receive the notice or the reminder, and neither were brought to my attention by my staff. Once my management team notified me about the receipt of the court documentation concerning this matter, the original notice was completed, identifying the driver, and returned.”

Noel also stated that he takes full responsibility, and he is ready to take action:

“I acknowledge that it is my responsibility as the registered keeper of a motor vehicle to ensure that suitable and effective arrangements are in place to safeguard against important correspondence not being dealt with as required.”

The former Oasis frontman once mentioned that he was arrested in his teenage years. In a 2021 interview, Noel mentioned that he feels neutral when he reflects on the times that led him to commit crimes:

“They were bleak times. There wasn’t a great deal to do apart from get into trouble – smoke weed, sniff glue, listen to music, go to football. That was it. I don’t look back on them with any romance whatsoever. But then again when I look back on them, they don’t fill me with any dread either – it was just growing up.”

He also mentioned that his record remain till this day, and jokingly implied his incompetence in thievery:

“I was arrested a few times for shoplifting, robbery, all of which f*cking haunt me to this day. I’ve still got a police record. If you’re caught three times, you pretty much know that you’re not destined for a life of crime.”

Ahead of High Flying Birds’ upcoming European tour, The Mirror caught up with Noel Gallagher and asked him about who he would want to work with for a supergroup. To answer the question, the singer explained:

“I don’t know if I would start one. Who would I like to be in a supergroup with? I could be in a band with [Paul] Weller, and I could be in a band with Johnny [Marr] easily.”

Adding the surviving members of the Beatles to the list, he went on:

“Playing the bass… Ringo and Macca would be f**king great. Imagine being in a band with Ringo and Macca. Who’s singing? Everyone. I’d f**king pay to be in it. Get me [promoter] Harvey Goldsmith.”

In 2021, Gallagher toyed with the idea of featuring cover versions of the band’s songs in a ‘best of Oasis’ collection. He and his brother Liam later sidetracked their plans because of disagreements.

A year later, the Beatles reissued the ‘Revolver’ album. This time, the former Oasis member talked about the band in an interview with NME and said:

“The thing is, if people say, so what is it about the Beatles? It’s just, like, they’ve done it more. Their songs are more culturally significant, and they did more of them, and they’re, yeah, a level above.”

Noel Gallagher recently sat down with Radio X’s Johnny Vaughan for a chat and revealed that his favorite Oasis song is their debut single ‘Supersonic’ from their first studio album, ‘Definitely Maybe.’

When asked which song he would pick as the one he enjoys listening to the most, Gallagher directly replied:

“It’s always going to be ‘Supersonic,’ just for how it came about that night, and it still sounds amazing to me when I hear it.”

Recalling the making process of the hit Oasis track, the musician continued:

“I just remember the circumstances. We were going to record ‘Bring It on Down’ because Alan McGee wanted [it] to be our first single, and we couldn’t get it right. We had one night left in the studio, and somebody just turned to me and said, ‘Well, we’ll just go and write another song,’ and I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, just like that.'”

So, Noel came up with ‘Supersonic’ in a short time:

“And I did. I went into the back, and I just wrote it. By the end of the night, that was the mix that we came away with. When we came down to London to see McGee, he said, ‘So, did you get [it]?’ We were like, ‘No, we didn’t, but we did this instead in the cassette, and he freaked out.”

In the 2016 documentary, ‘Oasis: Supersonic,’ Gallagher shared more on how he created ‘Supersonic’ during dinner as they were in the studio sessions of ‘Definitely Maybe,’ saying:

“Someone had sent out for Chinese or fish and chips or something – or Chinese fish and chips. I went in the back room, and as bizarre as it sounds, wrote ‘Supersonic’ in about however long it takes six guys to eat a Chinese meal.”

However, Liam Gallagher disagrees with his brother as his favorite song from Oasis’ catalog is ‘Live Forever.’ During a fan Q&A on Reddit in 2019, he revealed why he picked that track with the following words:

“It’s my favorite because it reminds me of the most important person in the world, my mam.”

While Liam Gallagher has plans to perform the Oasis’ debut album, ‘Definitely Maybe’ in its entirety to celebrate the record’s 30th anniversary, Noel Gallagher has expressed a different stance on the matter. In a recent interview with Spin, Noel shared that although there are fans who couldn’t get to see Oasis on time, they have to overcome it somehow.

When asked if he would be hitting the stage to celebrate the album’s anniversary like his brother, Noel replied:

“Well, I’m not going to perform it in its entirety on the banjo, if that’s what you mean. I prefer to live in the moment and keep making new music. I acknowledge the past. ‘Definitely Maybe’ is great, and Oasis were great. It was an amazing moment in everybody’s lives, but you’ve got one life.”

Despite his own reluctance to revisit the album, Noel expressed support for Liam’s decision to perform live shows, saying:

“I don’t intend to f*cking live it in the past. If Liam wants to do the show, great. He’s got to make a living and all of that. Keep the f*cking flame alive. It’s not something I particularly would be able to put my heart and soul into.”

Elaborating further on his perspective and offering the fans a way to overcome this disappointment, the singer added:

“If Oasis hadn’t fulfilled its potential, I might have a different attitude towards it. But as Oasis did everything it set out to do and more. I don’t see the point. It was a moment in time, and if you missed it, tough sh*t. I missed the Sex Pistols, and I’ve managed to get over that. So, people should get over it.”

With the upcoming anniversary of ‘Definitely Maybe,’ there has been great anticipation among the fans for a potential reunion. However, the latest news is not quite in line with expectations unless, of course, one of the two parties takes a step toward this.
