Talking Heads drummer Chris Frantz answered the question the band has received numerous times since their break up. The drummer appeared on Cumulus Podcasts for a short interview, where he was asked about a possible Talking Heads reunion.

Although Frantz stated he would look forward to a reunion, it doesn’t seem to be the same for the frontman, David Byrne. The drummer, blaming Byrne, said:

“Well, wouldn’t it be such a great thing if we did? Yeah, I would love to do that, and I’m sure most of the band does, but we have our erstwhile lead singer, he looks down his nose at reunion.”

The drummer shared the last time he spoke to the former frontman with the following:

“The last time? Well, he chooses to communicate by email these days, but last time I actually spoke to him was in June, we spoke.”

He was asked to clarify whether Bryne’s refusal to reunite was due to their relationship or his dislike of reunions. The drummer responded:

“I think it’s a yes to both questions. I wish I knew [what happened]. Tina [Weymouth] and Jerry [Harrinson] and myself were, I think, stunned is a pretty good word to describe the feelings we had when we stopped working together.”

Frantz then explained why:

“Because when you look at the movie ‘Stop Making Sense,’ you’ll see that – the performances of Talking Heads towards the end of our career were kind of like, I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that they were almost like a religious experience. I don’t know, maybe David just converted to some other religion.”

After he was asked if it was not getting any fun anymore towards the end of their career, the drummer refused and replied with the following:

“No. Things were better than ever. But you know some people kind of the better things get, the grumpier they get.”

The band’s latest reunion was at Toronto International Film Fest for a question and answer session to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their film, ‘Stop Making Sense.’ Additionally, this topic was mentioned many times during interviews, the latest of which Bryne expressed his joy for uniting with his bandmates, though it was only to celebrate the anniversary of the film.

In another interview, Frantz stated that he had tried to talk about a reunion with the singer, but he refused to do so and asked the drummer to never discuss it again. Considering Byrne’s words, it doesn’t seem like a reunion will be coming soon.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment, interviewer Lyndsey Parker asked David Byrne what he thought about Fred Armisen’s impression of his dance moves in the mockumentary series ‘Documentary Now!’ To answer, the singer said:

“I think they did a pretty brilliant job. I was in a club once, a small club here in New York, actually to see a different act. And, [Laughs], Fred got up. He was like the opening act. He got up and did an imitation of me and didn’t know that I was in the audience. [Laughs] And it was great.”

He also recalled what happened after Armisen noticed him:

“He was really good. And he came over immediately afterwards and goes, ‘Oh, I had no idea you were– I had no idea you were here. I’m so sorry. I’m sorry. I hope it didn’t bother you. I hope it didn’t–‘ and I thought, no, no, no, no, it was brilliant! Yeah.”

The ‘Final Transmission’ episode from the series’ second season paid tribute to Talking Heads‘ 1984 concert film ‘Stop Making Sense,’ which will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a re-release this year.

Now that A24 bought its rights, the restored version of the film will hit the screens again around the world on September 11. The same day, former Talking Heads members will reunite at the Toronto International Film Festival for a Q&A about it.

In addition, Rhino Entertainment is set to release a deluxe version of ‘Stop Making Sense’ soundtrack on August 18. This new edition will feature all the tracks from the 1984 movie, including two unreleased songs, ‘Cities’ and ‘Big Business/I Zimbra.’

Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne recently showed up on ‘Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend’ and talked about the final reunion of the band in the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2002. David described their time onstage as:

“It was fun, but it was tense. I remember there were some musical mistakes that drove me around the band. So I thought ‘Oh Geez, really, now? Here?'”

Byrne also mentioned that the feeling you get out of being a band member gradually evolves:

“I love collaborating with people but being in a band- I have to say it’s really wonderful, you’re like a family, you’re like a little team, a little army, all those kinds of things, but then after a while, it gets all the kind of negative stuff in the family is there, as well as the positive stuff.”

In 1992, the band’s drummer Chris Frantz talked about the band’s disbandment and vocalised his disappointment in David:

“You could say that Tina and I saw the handwriting on the wall a long time ago. That was one reason we were motivated to do the Tom Tom Club. But we were shocked to find out about [Byrne’s departure] via the Los Angeles Times. As far as we’re concerned, the band never really broke up. David just decided to leave.”

In a 2020 interview, David touched on the forceful nature of reunions:

“There’s a period where music really is essential to you kind of defining who you are and what your place is in the world, and you can never let go of that moment. But then again, you could never could never recreate and replace that moment either. There’s plenty of reunion tours and things like that and it’s become an exercise in nostalgia. You can never recreate that moment when people hear things like that for the first time.”

One of Talking Heads‘ biggest hits was David Bryne‘s second attempt at songwriting. Despite having doubts about making it in the music scene, the singer shared on 60 Minutes that two names played a part in making the song that changed his life; he said:

“I had no hopes of being a musician. I thought, [that] those people have proper training. They can play way better than I can; I’ll never catch up.”

Those two names were Alice Cooper and Randy Newman, and Bryne wanted to combine the two; he added:

“I think I tried to write one when I was in high school, and it was really bad. ‘Psycho Killer’ was a second attempt. It was inspired by Alice Cooper and Randy Newman. And I thought, ‘What if those two got together and wrote a song about a serial killer?'”

However, it turns out the initial inspiration for ‘Psycho Killer’ came from Cooper’s frightening stage shows. As David made progress with the song, he later imagined Cooper singing a Newman-style balled, and that was how the song came to be.

Bryne even explained his thought process of making the rack in the liner notes for the compilation album ‘Once in a Lifetime: The Best of Talking Heads’ where he wrote:

“When I started writing this (I got help later), I imagined Alice Cooper doing a Randy Newman-type ballad.”
