As the fifth season of ‘The Resident’ gave a start in 2021, one of the main characters found her storyline at an end. Emily VanCamp, who portrayed Nic Nevin, said goodbye to her role following a car accident arc that led to her character’s death.

While promoting her last episodes, VanCamp took a moment to discuss her exit with Deadline. She reflected on the situation by saying:

“It’s such a bittersweet moment for me. I loved doing ‘The Resident’ so much for the four years I was on it. Oftentimes, you hear about someone exiting a show because something bad had happened or there was some bad blood. But in this case, it’s the exact opposite. There’s nothing but love and respect between all of us, and this decision was not an easy one for anybody, but it was the right one for me, personally. I’m grateful that I was met with understanding and compassion.”

‘The Resident’ season 4 saw Nic undergo a pregnancy storyline, resulting in a baby girl’s birth toward the end. Shortly after this, VanCamp announced on social media the arrival of her own child, a daughter named Iris.

Official announcements about the actress’s departure from the show followed this post in late August. But, according to VanCamp, her leave had already been in the talks:

“I spent so many years on network television, but then suddenly, priorities shifted. I think there comes a moment in every woman’s life—in every person’s life—where it becomes less about work and more about family, and that’s what happened while I was making the show. Doing that many episodes in a different city, and then you add Covid to that, most of us couldn’t see our families for almost a year. It really solidified for me that family is where my heart is at the moment.”

Though the actress left during the early episodes of season 5, she made a return for the finale that year. She appeared in a few flashback scenes to help Conrad, her on-screen partner played by Matt Czuchry, get over Nic’s death.

As the show went on without her after this, VanCamp took part in a film project called ‘Miranda’s Victim’ in recent months. The new biographical crime drama will be released by Vertical Entertainment on October 6.
