Joss Whedon’s ‘Firefly’ aired on Fox in the early 2000s, but the channel canceled the show after only one season despite its fanbase. According to the reports, the problems leading to its end started before the series’ production.
Before the filming began, Fox expressed discomfort with the marriage between the characters Zoe [Gina Torres] and Wash [Alan Tudyk], asking Whedon to change it. When the director refused, the show moved on the way it was, but other issues followed suit.
While the company decided to air ‘Firefly’ on Friday nights, a slot that previously saw the cancellation of 30 other shows, it also failed to broadcast the episodes in the correct order by giving its pilot episode at the end of the season.
Fox’s promotional approach also added to the series’ cancellation. The channel introduced the show as a genre comedy instead of a sci-fi/western blend, causing the ratings to be lower than expected in the long run.
As Whedon later wrapped up most of the story with a film that came out with the name ‘Serenity,’ fans asked for a new season in the following years.
Although the news that came out about the director, who allegedly abused the cast members during the filming of ‘Justice League,’ lowered the possibility in recent years, Mal’s actor Nathan Fillion mentioned his thoughts about a reboot in a chat with ‘Inside of You’ by saying:
“Why wouldn’t I do that? It was one of the best things that ever happened to me.”
Rumors about a reboot increased after Disney bought Fox along with the rights to ‘Firefly’ in 2019, and news reported that there were plans to revive the series.
Given the controversy surrounding Joss Whedon and Disney’s failure with other reboots like ‘National Treasure,’ no further announcements about the return of ‘Firefly’ have been made in recent years.
