Spinal Tap’s Derek Smalls recently chatted with American Songwriter about his new single ‘Must Crush Barbie’ and revealed his anti-inspiration, a bass player he wouldn’t like to sound like. The rocker explained:

“Well, I hate to say this about a rock idol, so to speak. But I thought, I’m never going to be like Paul McCartney with that little—it looks like he’s playing a ukulele or something. It was kind of an anti-inspiration.”

He recalled the one time he played track that kind of sounded like he was playing the ukulele. Derek added:

“And I actually did play a Höfner at one point on ‘Rainy Day Sun,’ the old ‘Tap song. And it did feel like playing the bloody ukulele.”

Aside from his displeasure with McCartney’s ukulele performance, his new track ‘Must Crush Barbie’ came to life from his distaste for all the pink and Barbie he kept seeing everywhere. Smalls shared the story behind the song by adding:

“So, it was like—I turned on the tele and all of a sudden there’s all this pink. And I’m thinking did I die and wake up in a vat of Pepto Bismol or something? And all of a sudden, it’s Barbie, Barbie, Barbie. Barbie this, Barbie that. Barbie something else. And I’m going, what the?!”

The rocker also expressed that he would have wanted a heads up before the movie came out. He said:

“I mean, they didn’t call up and say, ‘Hey Derek, in about 10 months you’re going to see a movie we’re making now that will piss you off!’ None of that.”

Paul McCartney picked his favorite songs from every band and project he has been in, and changed his favorite The Beatles song.

Two years ago, the rocker named ‘You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)’ as his favorite song of his time with The Beatles, and recently, he named another as his favorite.

On McCartney’s website, he was asked a question he received on Twitter from a fan. The fan asked him about his favorite songs from all his The Beatles, Wings, and solo times to show an alien who’s never heard of his music. After narrowing down his choices, he shared:

“It’s always very hard to narrow down favorite songs, so what I do is just make a guess. What comes to my head for The Beatles would be ‘Yesterday’ – I’d say that was an important moment. But then again, my inner voice says, ‘What about ‘Hey Jude’? What about ‘Let It Be’…?’ So, it is a very difficult question to answer. But I’ll plump for ‘Yesterday.'”

He then shared his favorites from his Wings times:

“For the Wings period, I’ll go for ‘Band on the Run,’ although I’ve just heard recently the song ‘Arrow Through Me’ is really getting all sorts of attention, so maybe the aliens would like that! I always liked it myself as a song, but it’s obviously been played somewhere recently, and people are going mad on the streaming.”

McCartney recalled one of Wings’ songs playing in the kids’ animation movie ‘Boss Baby,’ and shared his younger fans’ reaction to the song while expressing his happiness:

“I remember ‘Blackbird’ was in the film Boss Baby - it’s an animation film for kids – and parents would come up me and say, ‘You know my kid’s favourite song of yours? It’s ‘Blackbird’!’ It is great that this young generation is getting into the song. I wrote it so long ago and it’s resonating with them now – it’s quite amazing, it’s very gratifying. But anyway, that aside, let’s say ‘Band on the Run’ would be my choice for Wings.”

The Beatle revealed his favorite solo song to be from his earlier works:

“Then, for my solo period, I would go for ‘Coming Up’ from McCartney II.”

Though McCartney recently chose his favorite Beatles song to be ‘Yesterday,’ when he first named ‘You Know My Name (Look Up the Number),’ he claimed that he always named that particular song whenever asked about his favorite track. He additionally named ‘Strawberry Fields,’ ‘Hey Jude,’ ‘Blackbird,’ and ‘Eleanor Rigby.’

In a recent interview with Grammy.com, Mark Ronson shared some thoughts about his past collaborations. He specifically mentioned his work on the track ‘Alligator’ from Paul McCartney’s 2013 album, ‘New,’ and the advice he received from the former Beatle during its production, saying:

“He definitely gives you a day to f**k up and be an idiot because you’re just so nervous to be in the studio with McCartney. By the second day, it’s like, ‘Okay, get your s**t together.'”

About his suggestions, he went on:

“I remember running around just like, ‘What sound can I find for Paul McCartney that every other amazing producer who ever recorded him [hasn’t found already]?’ He was like, ‘Anybody can record a pristine acoustic guitar. Give me something with some characteristic that’s iconic. That feels like someone just put the needle down on track one on an album.’ That’s something I always try to remember: don’t just make it sound like a guitar, make it sound like a record.”

After their collaboration on ‘New,’ McCartney and Ronson worked together on a television project. The 81-year-old singer made guest appearances on a few episodes of the 2021 series ‘Watch the Sound with Mark Ronson.’

In an interview with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that year, the DJ mentioned that Paul McCartney also shared some songwriting ideas with him during a phone call following the show’s release. Then, he recalled what happened after the call ended as follows:

“I look at my phone, and there is a voice recording on my phone from Paul McCartney. He sang a little bit of this song to tell me to go make the song, ‘I’m in love and I’m happy.’ It’s crazy; I’m dropping it on Spotify on Friday, I mean Apple Music. [Laughs]”

Dolly Parton reunited the two living Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr together to record a new version of one of the band’s hits ‘Let It Be.’

Parton debuted a cover of the song this Thursday as the latest single from her upcoming rock album ‘Rockstar.’ Parton stated that she was so proud to be able to sing such songs with McCartney.

According to the singer, McCartney not only sang the song with her, but he also played piano, with Starr playing the drums. The rest of the lineup for the song consists of Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac playing percussion and Peter Frampton of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band playing guitar.

She shared her gratitude with the following:

“Well, does it get any better than singing ‘Let It Be’ with Paul McCartney, who wrote the song? Not only that, he played piano! Well, it did get even better when Ringo Starr joined in on drums, Peter Frampton on guitar, and Mick Fleetwood playing percussion. I mean, seriously, how much better does it get? Thanks guys!”

Parton called the collaboration ‘a mini The Beatles reunion,’ sharing that the drums were initially recorded by another drummer but she later wanted to replace it with Starr. She explained in Talk Shop Live:

“We thought, well why don’t we just replace the drummer with Ringo? And so that’s what we did because I thought ‘Wow, that would be all the Beatles.”

The upcoming album ‘Rockstar’ is scheduled to come out on November 17. The album has 30 tracks, featuring a mix of covers and original songs. The singer collaborated with more than 40 artists for the album, such as Elton John, Pink, Steven Tyler, Sting, and many more.

Stella McCartney has made a name for herself with her fashion house by removing fur, leather, feathers, and animal hide from her sustainable collections. However, in a recent interview with TIME she talked about being a ‘nepo baby’ and her father Paul McCartney’s one condition when she was just coming up in the fashion industry. She expressed:

“As one of the first nepo babies, I had the privilege of choice. I’m very aware of how lucky I’ve been to be accepted to work in this way since day one.”

In her early days, Stella attended Central St. Martins, an art and design college in London. Paul had told the outlet his only condition for his daughter. He said:

“She had to prove herself. I said if she doesn’t do well at the end of that year, then the name is not something to help; it’s a cudgel to beat her with. But she did well.”

Even though Stella eventually succeeded in her line of work by becoming the creative director of Chloé at 26 years old and named the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards Designer of the Year in 2000, she explained on Good Morning America that she had to fight to make her name stand alone. She expressed:

“I was very aware of the kind of eye on us as a family unit. Just being pre-judged and [finding] my own sense of self within all that, yeah, it was really important.”

However, after her experiences with different fashion houses cut to founding her own brand, the designer recalled the challenges she had to face regarding the use of animal products. She recalled to TIME everyone around her pushing her to use leather by sharing:

“I’ve had moments where I’ve been challenged very heavily to change my morals for the success of the company.”
